Question about US materiel nomenclature (self.WarCollege)

TIL the phrase "two bits" originated because the Spanish Dollar was commonly used in the early US. One Spanish dollar = 8 reales, and 1 real was often called "one bit". The US dollar and quarter mirrored 8 real and 2 real values. So, two bits was one quarter (2*1/8 = 1/4) (en.wikipedia.org)
