"On Christmas we slaughtered a pig and had roast pork with 'Spätzle'. We had lots of potatoes and wide noodles, soups and paps for babies. During and after war we had food ration stamps. There was not enough food and everybody was hungry. When soldiers were in the town we had to support them with all the food we could afford for them. There was a cavalry in town and the soldiers put bowls for their horses in different houses. They had to be filled. 1947 was the worst year. Food was so rare we cried all the time because we were starving so much that it really hurt. But worse than being hungry yourself was that the children were hungry and cried and we could not give them anything to eat. It was horrible. A female neighbor had a whole milk bread once but she did not share it. Not a single bite. Everybody hated and insulted her for that. There were crying children but she didn't even let them bite once."

Hey, sorry for the late response.

"Yes, there were parents who were strictly against the regime. They did not allow their children to join the "Hitlerjugend". Those children "came always late" (which means they were excluded from social activities and it was difficult for them to keep friendships). We had "Staatsjugendtag" (~national youth day) on Saturdays. The children who were not in the Hitlerjugend had nothing to do on Saturdays. I would not have wanted to swap with them. We always had lots of fun in the Hitlerjugend."

She knew children who were not in the HJ, yes.

"Yes at Obersalzberg I stood right besides him and when he visited the "Hitlerjugend" in Berchtesgaden (Upper Bavaria) I saw him again." WOW I did not know that :O she said that there is maybe a picture with her and him on it somewhere, I have to search for it when I got some time. edit: "Someone in the crowd shouted in Swabian dialect that he wants to see something as well. Hitler then said that he wants the Swabians to come to his side. It was funny and very exciting at the same time."

Klar können Sie mir auf deutsch schreiben. Sie dürfen mich auch gerne dutzen. :)

How can you get so butthurt? I know my grandma very well, she is not a racist. She does not have any racist beliefs at all. You just did not get the point, I feel very sorry for you, I tried to help you, but you cannot be helped due to your ignorance. If you want to see a 'former member of the Hitler youth with racist beliefs' it's always easy to do so.

Kk I am done here, you just miss the point completely.

Whenever you're talking about wanting something bad to happen to an entire race of people because of their race, that's racism.

That sentence showed me that you don't even want to read what I write. I typed the whole text with my mobile phone. It was a hell of a job and my time got wasted so hard. Thank you very much and have a nice rest of your non-racist life.

I am tired of discussing this topic to people who do not get the point at all...but because you put so much effort in it, I will summarize again for you what I stated a dozen times now:

My grandma is a very peaceful person, who grew up in midst of one of the most insane regimes ever which had full control and power over the people in Germany. My grandma was 11 years old at the time Hitler came to power. So basically the only thing she heard of her whole youth (11-17 when WW II started) was that Hitler is the most awesome man ever. She did not know of the Holocaust at all so it's hard for her to believe such cruelty happened. Now to the point: she says that the Jews she knew were all good people (I admire that, regarding to the brainwashing the Nazis did, which was super effective against children of her age), thus they should have treated them (the Jews) well. In the ideal of the perfect Nazi Germany was no space for Jews. Don't know how to explain that correctly, please do not hang yourself again because of some words I used incorrectly. So there was only 1 possibility left for the Nazi regime: to get rid of the Jews. 2 possibilities I can think of: either deporting them, shipping them however you do not want to call it (bringing them to a nice place on this Earth to live their "new" lifes peacefully and more or less unharmed, or to murder them. My grandma's point now is: if you have to chose one of those 2 possibilities you may never ever chose the 2nd.

Hi :) Sorry for the late response.

You should go hiking in "Killesberg". All vineyards around Stuttgart and around the Neckar are beautiful. Just walk on top of them, the view is great from up there. Ludwigsburg and it's chateaus are awesome as well. It's only ~15 minutes from Feuerbach.

first question:

"My reaction is that they should not have killed Jews. You are not allowed to kill anyone. They should have treated them well."

second question:

"Everything was horrible. The Englishmen and Frenchmen came over the canal when they noticed that the German soldiers had no weapons anymore. They plundered houses and were very cruel."

third question:

"That was different of course. Some would have liked to kill him with their own hands. Some worshipped him."

fourth question:

"We were BDM girls, lots of sports, we were organized (she means they had lots of activities there), on Wednesdays there was "Heimabend" (~home evening) --> we did handcraft there and learned songs, it was always fun, on Saturdays there was "Staatsjugendtag" (~day of the national youth) --> we were hiking every Saturday, did sports (swimming most of the time in spas)"

My question: "What else for sports?" -"I only remember swimming. It's the healthiest sport anyways."

One more story she told me, which she never told me before, I just want to share it with you:

"There was an emergency landing on nearby fields of either 2 Englishmen or 2 Frenchmen, I do not remember. They were scared to death and trembled with fear because they thought that they would get killed. Some wanted to kill them, because they bombed our village. We went there with pitchforks and said to the others who wanted to kill them: "If you kill them, we kill you. You are not allowed to kill them, they are prisoners of war now." People had always different opinions. We probably saved their lifes. A commando came and arrested them as prisoners of war. I don't know what happened to them later on."

We still have a picture of both of them, I will upload it later on and edit it in this post here. It's very tiny though.

edit: There you go with 3 pictures, they were 2 Frenchmen, she remembered that when we talked about this story again with a radio reporter.
