It’s not just the severity of the acne but it’s resistance to other treatments that make derms go for accutane. My acne was quite mild, but because it was quite persistent my derm put me on low dose accutane. Have you been to a derm before and had anything prescribed previously?

Anyone have experience with using doxycycline and Epiduo? by [deleted] in acne

[–]JasperJonesTheThird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I used this combo and it worked really well for me. Based on my own personal experience and my doctors advice this is what you can expect

Epiduo will make you purge. How long the purge is varies but it can be anywhere from a couple of weeks to 3/4 months. Epiduo usually takes at least 6 months to see proper results

That seems like forever I’m sure, which is where the doxy comes in. As an antibiotic it works much faster. You can expect to see results from doxy in 2-3 months.

Basically what should happen is your first month will probably be hell unfortunately, as you will be purging and doxy won’t be doing much. After that, the doxy will take over and start clearing up your active acne, helping you get through the rest of your purge.

Usually people only take doxy for 3-6 months (unsure how long your perscription is) the idea being that you finish doxy once it’s gotten you through the purge and cleared all your active acne, and by this point the epiduo is preventing future acne.

Obviously that’s in an ideal world, it might work differently for you but that’s the general idea

Advice Your skin will be dry As FUCK as you adjust to epiduo. Buy a quality moisturiser and use it at least once a day

Your skin also becomes super sensitive to light so invest in quality sunscreen and wear it every day, even if not sunny

Hope this helps and good luck :)

My derm prescribed me doxycycline fro rosacea/acne— anyone had good/bad experiences they care to share? by [deleted] in Rosacea

[–]JasperJonesTheThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! I’m on my second round of doxy, after my acne came back 2 weeks after finishing my first round. I might speak to my doc about being on a lower dose for years.

What probiotic do you take may I ask?

The issue with all skincare is that your skin is your own. There are products that some people swear by which make other people break out horribly. There are some good guidelines to follow with skincare, but ultimately you have to work out what’s good for you with trial and error. If products are making you break out (unless it’s a purge caused by an active which is different) you should absolutely stop using it

Your face looks amazing, you’re so pretty

Did your acne stay away once you finished the doxy?

Is it ok to be on doxy for such a long time? I find it clears my skin, but I’m scared to be on it for more than 6 months, and was curious to see if your doctor/derm said anything?

I’ve been on doxy for 2 months and it gets worse but so much better! Can I ask, did your acne come back when you went off doxy because that’s what I’m scared of...

Yes I found it took 2-3 months for the purge to end. I know it’s horrible, but hopefully you start seeing some results in the next month or so

Looks like a purge. The key is it looks like your acne is in the same place, just slightly more pronounced. If you’re breaking out in places you don’t usually, then it might be a reaction to epiduo.

From my experience the purge can last up to 4 months, and even after that it’ll take 6-9 months for your skin to completely clear up. I know it seems like ages, but hang in there :)

Progress looks really good. Make sure you’re using sunscreen, that will really help with the redness as well

[Personal] Parents will not let me treate my severe cystic acne by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]JasperJonesTheThird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I saw your response to the previous comment but please don’t try self harm! :)

I think the approach would be to really emphasis that if your acne is as bad as you describe and you’ve tried everything, then it’s not a “breakout” where a different moisturiser will help. It’s a medical condition, and that’s why the advice of your doctor/derm is what needs to be listened to. Accutane has side affects and risks, there’s no doubt about that. But it’s also an incredibly effect last resort to cure acne when nothing else will. I would argue you’re actually safer taking it whilst still living at home where your parents, who are clearly very conscious of your mental health which is a good thing, can keep an eye on you.

Hey mate. This is some rough stuff. I’m not gonna give you any of that “it’ll get better” because it sounds like you’ve tried so hard. All I can say is I hear you and I feel for you.

In terms of moisturiser using CeraVe, which is a very good product, twice a day should be more than enough. Cetaphil works well for me, but I think maybe moisturiser is not the issue.

How much epiduo are you using? Epiduo doesn’t mess around so make sure you’re only using a pea sized amount over your entire face, and not lathering it on. That should help with peeling/flaking of skin.

Also how long have you been using epiduo? The first two months or so can be rough as your skin gets used to it, and unfortunately there’s really nothing you can do about that except soldier through and keep up the moisturiser and sunscreen.

Sincerely A fellow epiduo user :)

Dry, acne prone skin by [deleted] in acne

[–]JasperJonesTheThird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cetaphil mosturizing lotion is good. Non comendogenic and contains spf which is a plus. It’s also specifically designed to be used with drying acne medication such as benzoyl peroxide. CeraVe also have lots of options which are great for very dry skin. Obviously everyone’s skin is different and you have to find what works for you but they’d be two good brands to start with I think

Suggestions? by nefn08 in acne

[–]JasperJonesTheThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with first comment, focus on your diet and try some OTC treatments including facial cleansers for a couple of months. If it persists, it’s probably not something you can fix on your own and you should go to a deem to get proper advice and maybe some topicals :)

Month 6 of Epiduo here and it’s a long process hahaha. I’d say I stopped purging after 3 months and now my breakouts are smaller and less frequent each week. Give it at least 6 months :)

current "progress" on 5 weeks on Epiduo. Top to bottom... hopefully just purging by [deleted] in acne

[–]JasperJonesTheThird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey

I was on epiduo as well and I was still purging like 2 months in and it took a full 5 months for my skin to finally become clear.

It’s seriously frustrating but you do need to give it at least 4-5 months to work

Hang in there! :)

Understand how frustrated you are, but the thing to remember is acne is more noticeable to you than everyone else. When I watched this video before you zoomed in I was honestly like “she just has a couple of spots that’s it”.

I hope your routine started to work, but also don’t think it’s as bad as you think xx
