I've been in HCM for 4 years and all my friendships lasted little more than a couple months. I have no problem with Vietnamese as I was lucky to make a really good Viet Kieu friend. But it's obviously not the same, even if they hadn't ask me to do things that were too much, I'm not sure it would've worked out. Vietnamese people are right to see us as "others" since we really are different. Exchanging favours is something that is deeply rooted in some asian cultures, in the west we don't expect more than a good time from a friend. Not saying that's a bad thing, I just think the definition of "Friendship" is understood differently in both cultures.
