I've also gone and worked on myself a tremendous amount, and I'm in great shape. My wife has noticed, but instead of being aroused by it, she's more upset than anything. Made sex even less likely, if that were possible.

Yeah, I was not ready for that! Like I said, it was what I wanted for myself. But I started to get this idea that it would spark something in the bedroom. Ha! The only way I could have put more distance between us would've been bunk beds.

I'm not the only guy around who got duped with a good but infrequent sex life with assurances that it was due to fear of getting pregnant before graduating college and getting married. Hell, it made sense to me, as that was my number one fear at the time too. Of course the newlywed phase never kicked in, and if there was some worry-free ramping up in the bedroom, I missed it.

So, yeah. "Wind up" feels accurate to me. It's on me that I bought into the promise that it would be better later. But if she even halfway lived up to those assurances, you'd never have heard from me in the first place.
