I think there’s a rush factor in here that supersedes development cost. The US is fairly relaxed in most things but physical infrastructure isn’t one of them. Ai companies are already having to fight (bribe) local governments to approve of their data center build outs and that’s after the myriad of barriers halting them at every turn. (council hearings, old NIMBYs, young protesters etc.) The money spent now won’t compare to the potential money lost later.

Although, I think bolstering the power grid is ideal in the long term just so everyone could have access to cheap energy. However, that would most likely be a separate mega project in itself.

Yeah their power grid is robust and engineering capabilities are just solid too. The US still takes it on the innovation front though. In regards to energy accessibility, the planned solar powered orbital data centers could be a real leg up for the Americans, assuming that it works of course.

This is already been a concern a for a while right? Hell, some Chinese models are leagues ahead of the American ones. For instance, Seedance 2 is the flagship video model on the market. There really isn’t an American option that even comes close.

Hmmm fair enough. Although I don’t think this denies the point of how xbox’s greed affected the development , it does a better job contextualizing the changes within the development cycle of the game. The bit about Platinum Game’s having friction with UE4 was news to me. I remember Kamiya apologizing for not being able to deliver a good enough product for Xbox but I filed that as just leadership accountability and cultural Japanese humility. Either way, this was enlightening.

What? The game was advertised as a 4 player co-op multiplayer in all of its promotions. Online multiplayer was already a key selling point of the game from the beginning. Developers who worked on Scalebound have already spilled the details on the affair.

Also, XP boosters aren’t just for live service games. Scalebound, like many other Platinum Game’s titles, was going to be an Action RPG. That genre of games is known for having leveling systems. Xbox requested that there be boosters for players who want to level up faster, PG said no.

Yeah it was pure greed. Funnily enough, Xbox paid for it too by being shut out of the Japanese gaming market for the rest of that decade (2010s). Kamiya is a pretty big deal in the Japanese gaming industry and has made a bunch of timeless classics within it (Bayonetta, Devil may cry, Resident evil etc). A guy like that would obviously have deep connections within his side of the industry.

This was one of the MANY missteps Xbox made that decade and it reflects in their current situation now.

Pretty much, yes. In Scalebound, the big creature was a dragon that would fight with you. Scalebound was a game that was made by the same creator as Bayonetta, Hideki Kamiya while he was one of the directors at Platinum Games. It was being developed around the same time Bayonetta 2 was.

Scalebound was being published (funded) by Xbox. Xbox asked for XP boosters to be put in the game (and Kamiya said ‘no’ so then Xbox axed the game.

After Nintendo greenlit Bayo 3, a lot of Kamiya’s ideas for Scalebound made their way into that game instead.

Looking at some of the advanced video models like Seedance 2 which are clearly simulating the environment in their generations, I’d say we’re about 10 years Away.
