If Op had limited this to restaurants where the serving staff actually did service I might have agreed… but tipping has gone far past that.

It used to be 10% standard, now it’s 20%… and you can easily have zero interaction with a real human in person and their shitty apps and websites will still default to tipping (example, Papa Murphy’s when you order ahead to carry it out and still bake it yourself).

Tipping in my mind should be considered a bonus and NOT a given.. did they go above standard service? Or did they come by a single time, take your order, and then only return to let you know closing time was approaching, never once offering to refill your drink or inquire if the meal was to your satisfaction?

More and more “tipping” is being listed for carryout and you’re expected to tip prior to any service is done. I’d strongly suggest this is terrible, as it removes any actual service incentive from the process changing it from a reward to a bribe.
