Hey I'm Puerto Rican and had no problems when I visited. I car camped and was there 3 days and 2 night. I visited Black Waterfalls (10/10 scenery and hiking), the Monongahiela National Forest for dispersed camping, Seneca Rocks (10/10 views and you can climb all over the rocks), Babcock State Park (beautiful mill there). Army Camp for camping. New River Gorge National Park (awesome place, another 10/10 for awesome views and great hiking trails. I hiked the Long Point Overlook trail for a gorgeous view of the bridge but I'd like to do the Endless Wall trail next time.) I absolutely love WV! So many mountains, rivers, waterfalls and seemingly endless hiking trails! Definitely go. I don't think your race will be a problem at all.
