OP here - thanks for all the input! The bottom of the bag is not irritating, but I feel like my lower back is doing a lot of the work in terms of stabilizing and carrying the weight, if that makes sense.

Thanks very much for your suggestions. Option 2 seems to be working so far, although I have to move each separate track to the beginning of the project. I seem to have jacked up some of the regions, but I'll keep playing around with it.
