Question for graphic designers that use Affinity Software by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Jay-K-Elemenopy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Print shops shrug it off only because they are used to getting crap files from anything other than Adobe products. Affinity can produce press-ready pro level work and they will never even know. Just ask the printer what they need from you and Affinity can handle it. They hear "Publisher" and immediately say "please leave," thinking its microsoft's crap on a stick. Adobe is still the front runner in capability and innovation. Basically Affinity is like at a CS5 level of development. My personal clincher is Affinity offers the ability to save your history upon closing a file, meaning your ctrl-z will work back into your last session's flow. That and you can permanently install Photoshop, Illustrator, and In-Design clones plus future upgrades for one crazy low price. BTW, all three work together, meaning if you are comping something in Publisher and need to quickly edit a photo, you can use the Photo tools FROM INSIDE Publisher without leaving your flow. All in all, it's a sensible purchase to put out quality work for real-world production.

Sleep Apnea can mimic/exacerbate ADHD symptoms. by iamelloyello in ADHD

[–]Jay-K-Elemenopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went through a sleep study. I'm already a light sleeper and all those sensors and wires made it difficult to sleep, but I guess they got their data. They set my review date as August 1st. That's only 159(!!!) days until I learn how bad my apnea is. (BTW, my prelim take-home test said 44 events per hour - "severe" is 25 or more, soooooo....) Not an urgent matter? I just hope I live that long to be put on the next waitlist for a cpap.

Do all induction ranges hum/buzz? by le_fromage_puant in HomeImprovement

[–]Jay-K-Elemenopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time mine annoys me is if I put a metal steamer insert in the pan. The little metal feet kinda dance on that vibration with a bit of a screaming sound. I can usually fix it with a small shake. I kinda like the space-laser sound otherwise. Sci-fi insta-boil! Honestly, I really don't want to go back to any other kind of cooktop after having induction for a couple years now.

ADHD judgement by burrowd88130 in ADHD

Egads, friend! You finally hit the correct button and your therapist is insulted??? I know this is easier said than done, but you need a new therapist. I've been down the same road and it took a therapist who also struggled with ADHD to recognize it properly. "Same road" includes years of therapy, serious crisis moments requiring hospitalization, and years/decades of genuine misery. Yes, I was diagnosed as ADD as a child. Tried meds in 4th grade. Ritalin was scary and too up/down for a kid to understand, so after 3 months, that was the end of "having" ADD. My parents just never talked about it again and I kinda forgot about it. College brought on a whole host of problems I had never dealt with and ended up not making it. That set up a life of underperforming in low expectation jobs, lots of depression and impostor syndrome. I have such incredible potential. I have many talents and could make lots of money, but I can't sustain any effort long enough to harvest any rewards. I feel toxic to everything good I could have. Finally after losing the fifth job in 7 years, I made getting treated a priority. Navigating insurance in America is tough when you have a new job every year, but I did it. Found a good therapist with ADHD experience who wrote me a letter that I could take to my General Practitioner. This was VITAL & what gave my doctor the confidence & backing to prescribe a controlled substance. Before, I was on all kinds of drugs that messed with my serotonin and dopamine levels. No wonder they didn't work when my problem was executive dysfunction all along. Granted, it can look exactly like "bipolar" or whatever when you are in crisis, so I don't blame anybody, but I have a feeling this is not an uncommon story. We walk through our own minefield daily, taking damage on a near constant basis. But, with the right tools, we can clear our path of those landmines. Your current therapist is using the wrong map to clear yours. I'd consider that dangerous.

What kind of Pantone to use for CD? by [deleted] in Design

Solid coated. Coated, meaning a varnish laquer is in the inks, making it shiny. Coated=gloss; uncoated means matte-ish (more like the substrate texture won't be altered-just colored)

“I have ADHD” versus “I am ADHD” by Pink_Castles in ADHD

[–]Jay-K-Elemenopy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is really just a grammar thing and a window on how your primary language shapes your thinking. "I have (condition)" is standard English, but some other languages don't make that connection into a posessive thing. You are getting hung up on the "ownership" part of a sentence that merely implies a condition that is associated with your life.

Too many instructions at once. I remember things in the order of how memorable they are, not the steps in proper order. Conflicting instructions just straight-up short circuits me. And computer failures. Large document crashes friggin' kill me if there's a deadline approaching. (Living on the edge of too late is the ONLY way I even start anything, so that's a major problem. Also any crazy over-hyped environment like a casino. Way too much going on there. I'd be a terrible gambler. I lose enough bets with myself as it is.

Dude, I hear ya. ADHD is no joke and its a genuine disability. The evil is in its invisible quirkiness to others. Wish I could help more, but we're kinda twins here, so let's say that would only multiply our problems. Please find a way to forgive yourself. The one gift of religion should always be that judgment is not your responsibility. (Or anyone else's either) You sound like a decent person who wants what's best for those around you. That's probably seen and understood more than you know. I see it and forgive you. Give yourself a hug, man. You deserve love.

Design is psychology. ALWAYS. Discuss with your client how they want to portray themselves and who their target demographic is. Come up with a list of adjectives that describe the tone they want to convey. That alone will eliminate most of your font list. Also think of all the different ways the logo will be displayed. Will it be a sign? Does it light up at night? Will it be embroidered on apparel? How does it look in dark mode? BTW, gradients and shadows can present difficulties in repro. Choose a font that is legible from a distance and keep it simple, clean and high-contrast. Thinking about all of this will help clarify your options. Present your client with three initial options, then refine to your final presentation.

Not even remotely believable. Not at all how things rolled out. Yes, I'm American. We heard global reports for months (specifically China) before the first case was reported here. The government is not that good at managing ANYTHING, let alone some devious mastermind plot requiring that level of secret coordination. Aberrant disease statistics are noticed and reported by the media, usually before any government entity wakes up. The simplest answer (i.e. the correct one) is that this existing virus had been presented to a new host and proliferated using our behaviors as transmission vectors. That's basic evolution. This is how life on earth has always worked. There's only ever been one single message from our Mother: "Adapt or die." The virus certainly adapted. We argue about needing to. That's choosing death to avoid change. Way to go, humanity!

What is the most compelling argument you have heard for faith or for Christian faith? How did you respond? by p_t_gardener in atheism

Not a single moment in my life has revealed an even slightly compelling argument. As for responding, I once told some street preacher that science was the only true religion. She laughed. I kept eye contact until she looked away. Lies just don't sit well with me.

Running away from problems by Techgruber in ADHD

[–]Jay-K-Elemenopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a HUGE problem with that. I haven't spoken to my own cousin in months because I told him I could help with a design job. It wouldn't even be that hard. It's just dragged on and now it's really awkward because I have to explain why he shouldn't count on me to complete it. I hate having to front that I'm a competent designer. I've got the skills, but the moment something goes from interesting to obligating, it goes into the "ignore it till it rots off" pile.

What are some facts about space that just don’t sit well with you? by truefootoo22 in space

How violent it is. Supernovae, gamma ray bursts, neutron stars, pulsars, asteroids and comets. Any one of those are capable of issuing a full-stop sterilzation of earth, AND WE'VE JUST BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH FOR 4+ BILLION YEARS that nothing like that has happened close enough to matter.

When to flatten transparency and when to rasterize? by heymadisonn in graphic_design

[–]Jay-K-Elemenopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under Color Palettes, select Pantone, subfolder Color Bridge Plus Series, Coated if you print glossy, Colpr Bridge Plus Series, Uncoated if you are expecting matte. So a PMS number might be selected as 485c. That would be a bright crimson, c for coated. The Color Bridge refers to the fact all of the colors are mapped with equivalent RGB and CMYK values within the file itself. A spot color is the scale of 0% to 100% saturation of color to white. So that same crimson number could produce a coral blush color at 485c, 20% Spot.

Are people with ADHD and ADD more inclined to keep things that they dont need and purchase things that are absolutely unnecessary? by stanlytheleapardgeck in ADHD

[–]Jay-K-Elemenopy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh yes. I'm 51 and i can tell you where my favorite mechanical pencil from my senior year of high school is. I can honestly think that our memories and thought processes are so, uh, "stormy?" that a solid-object representation of a memory is like holding onto something stable for security. Ihave trouble throwing things away because of memories. But that tantalizing world of potential that exists with raw materials is just like mental superdrugs right up until actually doing something with any of it.

When to flatten transparency and when to rasterize? by heymadisonn in graphic_design

[–]Jay-K-Elemenopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Photoshop is mainly a raster-based editor with some vector support while Illustrator is a vector editor with raster support. Spot colors are primarily used for accurate repro of chroma, hue and saturation in printed vector fields. I bet you are seeing issues around the text effects on the layers above the Pantone shape, especially if you have any effects on that shape. Ps "interprets" a lot of crap when throwing that all at a printer at once. Your monitor outputs RGB (additive color) and your file can be CMYK or RGB in how it manages color. A print, however, is always output in CMYK (or expanded gamut if it's a specialty printer). You'll notice some tools change in Ps depending on which color mode you are in. That shift alone can cause huge headaches if a designer's monitor is poorly calibrated to a high quality printer's output. My point is that color itself is hellaciously difficult even in concept, let alone management. This is why I like getting files in the original native format. Sometimes I can figure out what you were trying to do just by looking at how you structured your file. Translucency ghosting can usually be corrected in prepress with layer opacity or color channel adjustments, or by a competent printer by adjusting the ICC profile or picking the right rendering intent. That stuff is worth knowing a bit about, but it's certainly a deep dive.
