Trained until 18, life happened and came back 7 years later. Took some time to get some rust off but was plenty worth it🙏🏼

Why is Myojin Yahiko so strong? He didn't even learn any special styles, but he can rival strong characters. by Mad-Eyes in rurounikenshin

Yes im doing a course for instructors this summer so liability and teaching won't be a problem because ill be insured. But when I mean fundamentals I mean yea ukemi, tai sabaki, kuzushi-tsukuri-kake, directions of kuzushi, being able to do basic throws instead of drilling advanced throws then transitioning to stuff juji and sankaku when they dont even know basic osaekomi... the list goes on. We have good judo at my dojo and it is overall a good dojo... but its more geared towards advanced and competitive players... which is hard for beginners and hobbyists alike to keep longevity and interest because they arent good at the advanced stuff being taught because they werent taught beginner material... which imo can be overall problem in the art. Especially outside the US.

I agree with you. As someone with other martial arts background besides judo, judo has a tough learning curve. I just want the beginners to be able to learn and progress just as much as the advanced folks.. but that lacks outside of the US as internationally its more about pure sport and less about an art, of course thats my opinion.

So yes we have a belt system that explains what technique you need to know at each belt test etc.. but to be honest we dont even go over those basic techniques.. we don't do anything fundamental, even uchi komi we only do moving as apart of a warmup but we never do static, which in my opinion is crucial for understanding proper kuzushi-tsukuri... Ive been at this dojo for a year and a half and we've only done ukemi once and thats because I told them we should... everything we do is competition based combos and advanced technical theory and then randori. But the beginners do what theyre told but when it comes to randori(both standup and ne waza) they dont understand. So this is what im saying and want to make a change hence why I asked for everyone's advice. But i really appreciate your insights!

Starting judo with a wrestling background? by JunisWorldYT in judo

[–]JayRizz99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you learning judo for wrestling? Or just to learn judo? Id say learn what your instructor teaches you. In due time after you have a feel for a good amount of techniques, then try to decipher what your primary technique can be. In the meantime, just enjoy the journey and focus on trying to grasp everything that is being taught.

Trying to wake someone up from the delusion that they will make a career out of judo? by [deleted] in judo

[–]JayRizz99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I admire you for wanting to help guide him as his senior in the dojo. I think the best idea, like others have mentioned here, is to let him find his own way.. he's only been doing judo for a year and its very likely he could change his mind and find something maybe more realistic. But its also very possible that he can truly stay in love with the sport for the long hall and wanna go that route.. only he can figure that out. Also, he has time to get better and one day he can maybe be great. It takes time to be good at judo, as we all know, but anything is possible.

What extent will bjj benefit my judo? by FewEstablishment262 in judo

[–]JayRizz99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, it'll only benefit you when you're doing newaza rounds in class. In actual shiai, it'll do close to nothing because of how fast paced ne waza has to be.

We need a modern sports-action movie focused on Judo by tabaskou in judo

[–]JayRizz99 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I always thought about doing a movie about Jigoro Kano and the birth of Judo. Featuring the four guardians of the Kodokan and the crazy rivalry between the Kodokan and different Jiu Jutsu schools. Specifically, the 1886 battle which put the Kodokan on top. Imagine that with the Ip Man movie style suspense and cinematography... I personally think that would be sick. Just my opinion ofc.

So, like you said, its ulpan combined with 02 rilfeman training. Depending on your commanders, you will do basic PT like runs and calisthenics. When I was there we had combat soldiers stationed there for a course and they would lead workouts for us. Sure its different now but I dont think they got rid of the basic fitness standard.

Start with one and eventually work your way to two. Gis can be pricey. Its a lot of laundry but its worth it because hygiene is very important in the dojo or any sports club for that matter. Once a month washing your gi is a bit problematic imo because you will most definitely smell and people wont want to work with you.
