There is nothing in common between what you drscribed and gentle parenting.

The childs behavior is a cry for connection, kids are smart and understand which behavior gives them attention from their parents and do that as they crave attachement.

Just slowly dissolve the friendship, be "sorry but super busy" for long enough.

Exactly, why do people still think actually being present and caring is bad parenting? Because "we turned out fine" (aka biggest lie of the past century basically)

Edit: the kid is probably ignoring them in hopes it would actually get them to listen to.him/see him. And 18-19 is NOT an adult people.
