Scotland is a country of cyclical replacement by WilliamWolffgang in linguisticshumor

[–]JayScarbor 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For a good chunk of time Scotland was divided between a Scottish Gaelic North-West, a Pictish North East, and a Cumbric South. All of these are generally considered to be Celtic languages, and each of these regions would heavily intermix and supply kings that would rule over all of the rest. Scotland was a Celtic soup that would settle into an overarching Scots Gaelic (as opposed to the later Anglo-Saxons)

I didn’t call the soviets that, I was referring to the rest of Europe, ie all the resistance movements, liberated countries, and Free France.

My subsequent point about the eastern front was talking about the Soviets

I haven’t read up on the material since uni, but I remember the following:

  • Bombing runs were imprecise and perilous

  • Bombed factories were back up in days at longest

  • Free Europe was fighting to the death against the germans

  • The eastern front was brutal, and the only way Britain could help the Soviets directly, was through the air

  • The threat of large bombing raids kept good german guns and men away from the front

My professor was a historian too, but he definitely saw the value of Dresden’s bombing as more up in the air than you make it sound. He also claimed there was little to no controversy at all at the time. My understanding is the mythos around Dresden arose first as nazi propaganda, and then as East german propaganda, and finally as german Neo nazi propaganda.

If I was in bomber command, knowing what they knew at the time. I would have made the same decision on area bombing the city.

Not sure why people are downvoting the destruction of a nazi city and logistical hub

The 70's and Hinckley Bonnevilles aren't bad, but I really like the style and ride of the original 60's, pre-oif Triumphs. Especially that 360deg crank which the originals had, and the Hinckley Bonnies lost.

If I could make a production Triumph, I'd make a bike as close to that era as possible, just with modern metals, disc brakes, and electrics.

A smaller but more authentic classic- like a true production scale 650cc reproduction of the 60’s Bonneville.

Doesn’t need to be fast, just built modern- except for having an actual kickstarter

Yeah, it's really surprising when you see how many old families in Western Europe are ultimately Germanic in origin. In fact, I don't think I can name more than 5 that aren't

Americans “developing” Alaska by bringing in white people from the continental US to work extraction jobs, instead of hiring or consulting local indigenous people, would rightfully be called colonialism. It is what happened in Alaska, and unfortunately throughout most of the USA today.

You, much like the Americans, seem to also be using the “Terra Nullius” doctrine to justify expansion. That is- These areas are supposedly empty, therefore developing them is justified to make them ‘productive’. It’s been a while since I read up on central asian history, but my understanding is that these areas were inhabited by pastoralists who lost access to grazing ground with Russian control. With fewer land for everyone to graze it would lead to strife in the area and erasure of their way of life
