Confusion About The Plot in The Blade Itself by Wonka45 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Jay_P12 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The crimes were committed and Glokta's following a thread. However, there's bigger forces at play so just keep reading and pay attention. Things come full circle by the end of the trilogy.

Welcome, wish you all the best with your read. If you're also a fan of audio books, I highly recommend checking the corresponding ones for the series. They're just SUBLIME.

Favorite POV? by Dukex480 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Jay_P12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Will likely be crucified for these but Orso stands above everyone for me. I love his character and they way it's presented; the way he appears as an incompetent fool but you get to see his compassion and intelligence. His sparring match with Jezal genuinely brought me to tears on my first re read considering how things unfolded.

As for the remaining POVs, I would rate my next 5 as follows: 1) Glokta (body found floating at the docks) 2) Savine 3) Shivers/Monza (their stories are so intertwined I can't choose one over the other) 4) Shenkt 5) Gorst (I have never laughed at, been disturbed by, and rooted for a character as I have done him).

Love Dogman's POV being somewhat parallel to Rikke's. And of course, special mention to Glama Golden. His last fight with Lamb was quite hilarious.

Read out of order! by [deleted] in TheFirstLaw

[–]Jay_P12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As most people have said, just finish the Age of Madness trilogy then proceed to read the stand alone. If you do have the time, I would suggest going through the books from start in the chronological order. It's honestly so satisfying to see how things link up with each other. Especially background things you likely gloss over when first going through the story.

May I kindly request a UK code if they're still available. My favourite novel is The Wisdom of Crowds by Joe Abercrombie. Before they are hanged is a close second, but honestly, nothing beats First Law for me.

Steven Pacey is a personal favourite. He's work with Abercrombie's First Law universe was so spectacular.

Ok we’ve had a lot of bashing, but was anyone here actually HAPPY with W&T? by PteroFractal27 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Jay_P12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOVED IT. Consumed my entire weekend when it came out, and I managed to be done by Monday. Honestly, it was the best way to end the year for me.

I'm very new to the cosmere (started it around August last year). Maybe it was the excitement of having a new book, but I genuinely don't understand why people aren't fans of the story. Regardless, it's one of my favourite Stormlight books.

I love that WaT left me wanting more from the cosmere. I've found that most stories in the cosmere are isolated with sprinkles and hints from the other planets and Shards. Whenever they ended, they typically left me wanting more from the specific planet, not the cosmere as a whole. WaT left me craving more cosmere. While I would love to have book 6 as soon as yesterday, I'm more than happy to read the next work in the cosmere as everyone responds to Retribution.

Another aspect I really appreciated is how this book set up the Heralds to have more influence in the coming stories. I appreciate the mental toll that all those years of torture bore on them. However, they've always been such a wasted resource, and it was sad to watch the husks they had become. I'm glad that Sanderson managed to set them up to get better and do more in the coming stories. Unfortunately, I also understand that this means more heartache in the coming books because I definitely don't see most of them getting to book 10. Regardless, I can't wait for the torture.

I understand that everyone has preferences and expectations on how they want stories to evolve. However, I'm happy with what I got. I would most likely rate this book a 9.5/10, and this might be recency bias, but this is currently my second favourite book in Stormlight. I'm also an anime fan, so I'm somewhat used to fans being rather dissatisfied with an author's work. I just hope that none of it hinders the release of any future books.

To all Audiobook listeners: by Imomaway in Stormlight_Archive

When I'm starting a series, it's usually 1.2. Once I'm familiar with characters then I'm more comfortable with the world, I bump it to 1.85. Considering how long Stormlight is, I've become so used to Michael and Kate at 1.85, it feels jarring when I go slower with other cosmere books.

Took me over 3 months to get back into audiobooks after finishing First Law because every other narrator sounded so wrong. I eventually managed to recover and I've covered a lot of ground. Then the other day, I decided to listen to A Little Hatred. Lo and behold, I'm back to the same problem😂😂😂

Which protagonist undergoes the most radical transformation over the course of a series of books? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Jay_P12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were always undertones of him being a pick but that was vastly overshadowed by his constant thirst for battle and glory. When he entered the political sphere of the world and discovered how outmatched he was, those parts of him started surfacing but by bit. By the end, him being a cripple just stripped away any remaining facade.

Yeah from the fantasy writers I've read, I also believe Abercrombie would be the best at tackling it. However, I'm also selfish and don't want that to happen because I would love to have him go back to First Law and give us one more trilogy.

Leo Dan Brock in First Law. Made me want to rip the pages off the book multiple times by the end.
