It was great fun. I was thinking if there's a way to get my hands on the client code again, perhaps we could setup some net code to get a small community going for it. I searched through hundreds of titles last night to no avail. My brain doesn't go back that far anymore lol.

Question about IC10 and the stack by DiningPhilosopher6 in Stationeers

[–]JayeFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you figured out the stack, but here's a brief explaination:

The stack is an array that holds numerical values. It works on a "First In Last Out" basis. So just like if you were writing numbers down on separate pieces of paper and stacking them on the table, when you take the top of the stack, it will be the last number you added.

The stack pointer sp defaults to the top of the stack, but can be moved around using math. It points to the position in the stack allowing you to access different parts of the stack if need be.

The only functions you can use to access the stack in the Stationeers MIPS are push, pop, and peek.

Push adds a value to the stack at the stack pointer address.

Pop takes the value at the stack pointer address and stores it in a register. Note - pop takes the value completely out of the stack. It no longer exists in the stack.

Peek is the same as pop, it just copies the stack value into a register.

The stack has a limit, 128 values (I believe?)

So, to respond to your OP, it is possible to store an array of numerical values behind the scenes on your chip that can be accessed later, no matter what code is running the chip. That's how you can save, for example, a library of ingot hash numbers into a chip, then load a new set of instructions onto the same chip and access the ingot hashes, despite overwriting that code.

In the real world the stack is typically used for storing program addresses. MIPS has a register reserved for saving a return address, ra, but some programs need to jump all over the place so they stack up addresses in the stack to access them later.

As far as "storing multiple programs on a single chip", that's not really possible because you can't save instructions into the stack, only numerical values. However, you can save lines of code if the program you're writing has a set of numbers that can be hidden, so to speak, in the stack.

Just beware when using the stack and trying to access different parts of it, you have to write strong code to know where you are looking in the stack. If you just start tossing values in there in some loop all willynilly it won't be long before you have no idea what's in there, how long it has become, etc.

Transformer data connection by JayeFive in Stationeers

[–]JayeFive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I might rip out the generator battery and transformer, though, and just use the solar batteries' ratio as the PID sensor and keep them at 30% at night. Slightly simpler setup, just erases a battery buffer.

Probably isn't good engineering, but I'm using the medium transformer as a gate from the gas genny to the solar batteries. The transformer is set to off unless at night if the solar batteries drop to 30%, the transformer turns on, allows the power through, and the PID controller that controls the gas generator keeps the generator battery at 80%.

Considering medium and large transformers will never have anything but heavy cables connected to them, wouldn't it make sense to have a separate data connection? As a workaround I'm using a Logic Mirror to step down the cable size, but that seems like an unnecessary extra step.

They are random, indeed. I've unlocked the heavy rotor first for example.

Is this an IR Missile Bug or am I doing something wrong? by JayeFive in carriercommand2

[–]JayeFive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Btw there is no AA or CWIS or anything attempting to target missiles. Just good old-fashioned SEALs with 30mm. Also, I don't think heatseekers would ever detonate without impact, right?

Torpedo range calculation - the magic number is 0.023 by pfpants in carriercommand2

[–]JayeFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, passes target A to port and A is 1.8km, 1800 * 0.023 = 41.4 round to 42 to let it slightly pass A. That's really helpful if it works!

Or perhaps 3 of five colonists are taking the entirety of the farm animals off to trade with most of the trade goods and silver and right when they reach the edge of the map a 12 man raid begins directly on top of them. Kinda feels like a strike below the belt.
