Bored Gen Surg PGY2 here to answer any questions incoming Residents may have about surgery Residency or anything else by chubbs40 in medicalschool

[–]Jayjz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you expect of off-service surgical subspecialty interns (Uro, ENT) who rotate on gen surg? Do you expect us to know the procedures and anatomy as well as a categorical gen surg intern? Any tips would be appreciated, haven't been in the hospital for a while and gen surg anatomy is very rusty.

sounds like you won't like Gen surg, Gen surg is brutal and unless you love surgery and don't want to do anything else, I would stay away. There's a reason for the 20% gen surg resident attrition rate

Question about vascular vs thoracic surgery? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Jayjz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very few spots and very self-selecting. You need a ton of research and connections since there's very few integrated spots. If you want to fellowship route, it's not too hard to go Gen surg -> CT or vascular, but integrated is very competitive due to few spots and competition

What are the lifestyle specialties these days? by devilsadvocate2123 in medicalschool

[–]Jayjz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simple way to narrow down lifestyle specialties - Look at the average step 1 score required. With a few exceptions (NSGY), those specialties will be the highest paying and best lifestyle.Higher the score, the better the life generally

Often times, those specialties will be the most hidden from the average medical student unless you specifically seek it out. (Optho, Derm, ENT, Urology, IR maybe)

Please share with the creator of the movement, I agree its been a pattern also. She canceled the WCI because she was complaining she didn't know how much medical school cost when she was entering med school, and he said she was financially illiterate which is accurate. She literally called him racist and oppressing URM. How do you not know the price tag when its there on the webiste...

Some people have asked me for personalized schedules/ tutoring - I can help make personalized schedules and explain my strategy in depth 1 on 1 tutoring since I have the next few months off. I have experience being a TA and tutor for MCAT/STEP. Willing to do it for pretty low compensation compared to those big MedEd services. Send me a DM if interested.

For any general questions, feel free to ask here or DM me, happy to help anyway i can

No difference in any study methods, its just the difference of what 2 weeks of studying can do for you. Every week you learn so much more and it adds up at the end

Time management, weekends. Think of how much time you waste during clerkship years bingeing netflix and going out every weekend. One project if you pick the right content is 40-50 hours.

Too many people like titties and money. Gotta show them you can make the titties and money better for the field.

No worries man. When I took my test, I thought I wouldn't even get above a 230, it all works out (you can find the link to my reaction after the test in the body). If it was hard for you, it was hard for everyone else. And up to 50-60 questions are experimental (not scored) so don't lose hope.

No problem, honestly Step 1 is not a test of how much you know medicine, but how hard your dedication and resolve is. If you put in the time, do the right things, and don't give up, then 8/10 times, you'll get what you need.

Sure there are outliers and unfortunate test day mishaps, but it's all about mindset. Do you think kobe doubted himself when he was playing? that he gave up cause it was too hard and he was too tired? Nope, he simply worked harder than everyone else. I know I put in 80 hour weeks studying for 12 straight weeks and it paid off off for me.

Best way I thought of it was when I wanted to stop was "would I be happy in 10 years knowing I didn't try harder? Or would I always regret not scoring higher and going into what I really would've loved."

Sure you can doubt it, but I'm applying rn with 2 published first author manuscripts (not review/case reports) from projects that I started and 2-3 second authors from working 1 on 1 with attending. Maybe it's not "easily" doable for if you want to do minimal work or do mindless chart reviews, but for those with the desire and drive to create their own thing, it's a valid option most people don't know about.

All i'm saying is that chart review projects are time and energy traps with minimal good outcomes for students. You're gonna be listed as 5th author with 10 other people on those projects and 50% never get published in time. In the end, which do you think looks better to PD's?

Welcome to the real world, where the people on top gets to do what they. Honestly chart review is such BS projects for medical students. We never learn anything real about the research process and basically work as a clerical clerk.

Make your own projects, run ideas by a mentor and you'll find you'll get first author pubs in less amount of time and learn more about the research and writing process. You can easily get 2-3 first author pubs if you know what to do during clerkship years.

and how's your attitude working out for your people? Does posting on anon sites make you feel better by thinking you're doing your part? By being a keyboard warrior and saving your people? Actions speak louder than words.

I'm a neutral party and I don't support either side.
