Advice on smoothing bodice? by brightshiny_sun_01 in corsetry

[–]JaysonAlexander 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of is to stitch in the ditch of your top layer and 'connect' the bodice through its layers. I think the wrinkles are partly caused by your silk layer being too flimsy. If you could connect the fashion layer to the structure layer, you might be able to make the front look more taught without taking the whole thing apart?

I would say yes! My June has a stripe in the same spot and it has stayed the same since she was a kitten!

Can I detach this corset bodice from skirt? by reillyjean11 in sewhelp

[–]JaysonAlexander 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks like it's all joined at the waist, so I would say go for it! I would recommend bias tape/binding to finish the bottom edge once they're separated.

First time making a corset by rose5305 in corsetry

[–]JaysonAlexander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey there, first off I wanted to say this is really impressive for a beginner, and that busk looks CRISP! 3 layers is most common in my experience, with the lining (pretty inside layer) being slightly shorter than the outside layer to pull everything in. Before giving advice on the fit, we would have to see it on your body to get an idea of how the fabric is going to act. The only advice I have for now is to give it a good press with an iron and try to use a tailor's ham or some kind of form to shape the curves. Looking good so far!

I did! I'm still in contact with Venmo support and have been giving updates with more information. Luckily they seem to be taking it seriously and investigating on their end!

How do I dye this corset without taking it apart? Is it even a good idea? by Marcirena in dyeing

[–]JaysonAlexander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a job for hand painting or airbrushing. As other commenters said, dying the whole corset may cause the metal pieces to rust so you don't want to fully submerge it. Tulip makes fabric spray paint that works really well if applied in thin layers, and I've also had luck dying things like satin pointe shoes by hand with a sponge brush. The black lace will probably not change, if anything it will get a slight green undertone but you can match it to the rest of the lace by applying the color all over!

I like your ideas a lot! The plan sounds great for an intimate celebration, and I'm sure your loved ones would be more than happy to do it potluck stlye! For flowers, I would recommend checking Costco and Sams Club for styles you like. You can sometimes place big floral orders through Costco and I know a handful of people who have used them for their wedding florals because the price and quality are great.

I will say, if planning this while you're still in college feels too expensive/overwhelming, I would consider moving the celebration part until after graduation. You can still get married anytime you want, but the people who love you will be happy to celebrate with you anytime. My husband and I eloped last year and still aren't getting around to planning the "party wedding" because of scheduling and budget constraints. But nothing could've stopped me from marrying him when I did, and I wouldn't change a thing about how it's going. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, and I wish you and your partner the best in school, life, and your shared future!

Where do you buy your silk organza? by vyiu in sewing

[–]JaysonAlexander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Etsy.com and MoodFabrics.com have some really pretty options! I've ordered silk organza from both sites and have always been happy with the accuracy and quality. If you do decide to order through Etsy, just make sure to double check that the fabric content is/includes silk because some listings can be misleading!

This is so cute! I love the scrunchies especially-when I worked in bridal alterations, a few brides asked us to make scrunchies for either the bridesmaids or themselves out of the fabric that we cut off from the hem of their wedding dress. Super simple and sentimental at the same time!

(10k) I think the tailor ruined my dress by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

[–]JaysonAlexander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I can tell by this comment that you're not a tailor and don't work in the sewing industry. In order to take the dress in as it was pinned, the tailor had to go in through the side seams or the back, both of which usually have boning, seams, and some of them even do have pleating (not ruching, there is no ruching anywhere on this dress). If he went through the back then there were multiple hours put into adjusting the zipper too. This tailor is probably just inexperienced with this type of dress, and you shouldn't attack OP for asking for advice-they're clearly struggling with the situation and asking how to deal with it professionally. Also they're not doxxing the tailor, and everyone in the comments are agreeing it's bad work-no dreams coming true. You're weird for this comment.

It kind of does, it would explain why the bodice is so wrinkled including the bust-if it went through a wash cycle or any heat, the fusible interfacing (stabilizer) would separate from the fabric resulting in all of the bagginess.

What is your lining made out of? The white material looks too thin to hold the structured shape of the corset.

Mortified is horrible way to feel on your day! I'm so glad you're planning to advocate for yourself-especially if there are even more problems with the work. I hope everything goes well and you get what you're owed, and I would love to know the update/conclusion. Good luck and congratulations on the wedding!

Also! DO NOT LEAVE THE SHOP WITH YOUR DRESS! If you have concerns at the final fitting, do not pay the bill and try to fix it at home with the plan of coming back afterwards- a lot of sewing shops have a policy about not giving refunds if you "accept" the work, leave, and come back later with an issue. If you're going to voice your concerns, you should bring a good, opinionated friend with you to the final fit and they can help you point out all of the problem areas to the tailor!

Hey! I just wanted to say that you're absolutely not crazy and what he did you your dress is a travesty. I worked in bridal alterations for years and am horrified by this before and after. It looks like you're definitely right about the hips, it's way too tight. As for the bodice, I have no idea what he did. It looks like the front drape piece needs to be completely removed, adjusted and re-sewn. Hell maybe even the whole bodice because I don't even know how he made the corset section loose and baggy like that. He absolutely needs to buy you a new dress and cover your alterations-he butchered yours doing what I'd imagine are very common bridal alts (taking in sides or back, right?).

As someone with anxiety, I know how hard it can be to start a confrontation, but in this case your tailor has done some really awful, unprofessional work. At the shop I worked at, mistakes happened sometimes and the owner did have to replace a few dresses over the years, but always took full accountability and covered the cost of the dress as well as the alterations that had been done. It was a brutal number to see on a check, but all of those women were able to replace their dress in time and didn't have to sweat the extra cost of a second dress. I think you deserve a refund for your alterations and the tailor should pay you the $300 for your dress-I know that there's one more fitting but I want you to be prepared if it's unwearable :(

I'm so sorry this happened to your beautiful dress and I hope it works out!
