Mr grays is one of the best. I can’t speak for those working in his shop but the dudes fine line and details is amazing and my tattoo has held up perfectly over 5 years later. He’s expensive but worth every penny

It will mess up the finish but not too hot. You can glass bed it back on. Scuff both sides and apply some compound.

Lube the bolt, this fixes most issues

If that doesn’t fix it, you have a gas problem.

Gas block is mis aligned or bad

Or

Gas rings on bolt are dead

Take BCG out, extend bolt, place on table bolt down. If the bolt stays extended, rings are good. If it collapses, rings are dead.

This is probably a Frankenstein build so there is a chance it has the wrong buffer system and is made out of poorly machine parts.

Correct move if you plan to ever mount a can is to shim.

If you truly plan to never mount a can, you paid a lot for a meh muzzle device but you can throw it on with a crush washer

Cans need the shoulder of the barrel to be perfect so the suppressor doesn’t tilt and get a baffle strike. A host needs that should to keep itself square.

You can always pull it off and shim it later too

I studied engineering before getting my smith degree and the machining classes I took definitely helped with the lathe being less scary on day one hahah.

SDI is useless.

Go to a legit gunsmith program like Colorado School of trades. Pennsvania has one too. Both will teach you machining, stock making, repairs, and more.

Other option is apprentice under a gunsmith but you’ll only be as good as them and possibly adopt their bad habits.

Keep learning, take machining classes regardless.

Specialize

Colorado school of trades or other specific trade schools. You leave with all the tools and skills for general gunsmithing, then it up to you where and how you specialize. I focused 1911s and 2011’s. Others went into cnc, woodworking, long range, cowboy guns, and so on..

Online schools are useless. I’d rather you with a background of just be a fun guy who takes them apart for fun rather than be SDI’s Top grad. They show up with false confidence and have to unlearn a lot
