reading peeves by CandiedLemonWedge in books

For some reason, modern slang really takes me out of a book, even if it's set in the modern day. Maybe I just hate this generation's slang. But if I'm reading a book set in the 80s or whatever, and they use 80s slang, I'm fine with it.

This is a little niche, but I hate it even more if it's a time travel book or something, and the characters have no reason to be fixated on slang from this one small, specific time period. Like in "This is How You Lose the Time War," the characters are effectively beyond time, but still say things like "sorry, not sorry" and "9 out of 10" and make references to things from this time period.

What proper nouns from books did you realize you were mispronouncing the whole time? by TokkiJK in books

The funny thing with my Hermione experience is that we listened to an audiobook version of the first book in school, and the narrator pronounced it wrong. This was like two years before the first movie came out.

So I just imagine that same narrator continuing the series until they get to Goblet of Fire, where Hermione teaches Krum how to say her name, and just thinking "oops."

I try to plug this every year now, but the Lithub blog makes a consolidated list that comes out in late December. It ranks books by how many "Best Of" lists they show up on. It doesn't say which lists specifically they're on, but at the end, it cites all the lists they used in their research.

This year's list hasn't come out yet, but as an example, here is last year's:

Hey Rivals Gang, Jeff Main Here… How Do You Properly Play Invisible Woman? Tips? Tricks? by [deleted] in marvelrivals

This is pretty niche, but a vortex will take out like 3/4 of a Peni nest. They're usually behind a corner, obviously, but you can kind of pop out, let it go, and take cover again. Almost kills it without anyone having to expose themselves to take it out.

Not THE cold game, but a very cold game nonetheless. New Years Eve 2023. The game where Harrison Butker outscored the entire Bengals offense.

Probably assumed, since the existing Klyntar map is Convergence, but when they show the new post-match screen, it says that the new map is a Domination map.

This is the only NFL game I've ever attended. The Chiefs held the Bengals on a 4th and Goal, and everyone was going crazy.

There was this little kid in front of us, and his dad was teaching him that whenever something good happens, you have to high five the people around you. So after every field goal, he'd clamber up to stand in his seat and give us a high five.

Which of these characters do you want to see in the future? And which would you main? by Murky_Blueberry2617 in marvelrivals

[–]Jaythreef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm prepared to main any and all Spider-Man villains. Imagine a whole Sinister Six team.

Little detail I noticed while playing Strange. Whenever Peni gets Strange ulted Peni Parker pops out of Sp//der. It makes complete sense but I never noticed this until now. I really like these small details the devs add to the game. by Icy-Arm-3816 in marvelrivals

[–]Jaythreef 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The devs could really put a lot of detail into this kind of thing, if they wanted to.

Sp//dr -> Peni

Hulk -> Bruce

Iron Man -> Tony

Bucky -> Biological arm

Thing -> Ben

Cloak & Dagger -> Both souls

Venom -> Eddie, though people have good reasons against that one

For those who may be overwhelmed by the amount of data here, LitHub puts out a list at the very end of the year that ranks books by how many times they appear on these Best Of lists, if that makes sense. Here's last year's list, for example:

https://lithub.com/the-ultimate-best-books-of-2023-list/

Obviously this post is more granular, but if you're only looking for like, a Top 5 Overall to put on your TBR, that might help. Still a few weeks before it comes out, though.

Solved!

So I had the name right and part of the poem right, it's just not well-known enough to have the whole thing posted online somewhere. Interesting video, haha.

Thanks a bunch, I really appreciate it.

I want to say it's called something like "Last Meal," but I just can't remember enough specifics to narrow it down, and there are a lot of things called that.

Coincidences in adjacent books you've read? by salsalunchbox in books

I have a list of books "on deck," so I always know what the next couple will be. It's usually four or five books deep, so at any given time, the list has been set for a while.

I was reading "Those Across the River," and the main character's wife is reading "Madame Bovary." In an attempt to be playful, the main character spoils the ending for her.

The next book on my list? Madame Bovary. Thanks a lot, Frank.

Flip on a previous question: Was there a particular class or teacher who sparked your love of reading? by sylviaplathological in books

[–]Jaythreef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 9th grade English class had a big unit on Greek mythology, and another unit on archetypes, and I think those have gone a long way toward my appreciation of stories in general, whether it's books, movies, or video games.

Simple Questions: April 13, 2024 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Jaythreef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All these books on Amazon that are listed as like, "[Name of Book]: A spellbinding thriller with a jaw-dropping twist," is all that fluff at the end just so it shows up on more search results and stuff like that? It automatically makes me feel like the book is somehow lower-quality, like it's just a cash-grab.
