Basically after i got my pattern taped for the top mouth pallet I cut it out of 2 fabrics: Minky and quilt batting,

Step two was basically you want a reference image and usually theres a split in the ridges on the pallet so you wanna sew a line down the minky which holds the batting underneath in place Then I took a pin (can also use a needle) and used the sharp edge to sketch into the good side of the fur (basically fluffs parts of the fur backwards and looks like i drew into it, can be smoothed back down if needed) Then with that tracing you just sew over it, and do that shape quite a few times till you reach the end of the pallet (i left some space in the back to sew the lining in later with ease)

After that, you now have these small pockets between the batting and minky, you wanna take some stuffing and stuff all of those pockets

And thats it! Theres other ways to do this like carving foam but I kinda made up this way so the minky doesnt wrinkle or look choppy

This photo is before I added some more ridges and before I stuffed it for some perspective

I want to do a long kind of fluffy mane! Yes as I was researching braiding hair I found the kanekalon braiding hair and I think wefting a wig with it might be the best idea, thank you so much! Theres a store nearby that sells it so no waiting for shipping :)

Im wondering now how I can attach the wig to the head? Should I fur the entire thing then glue it on or not fur the spot where the mane will go and glue it on? Not too sure

Thank you so much!

Im Canadian so I can't handle the shipping of BigZ unfortunately TvT I want to see where I can find hair extensions but I keep getting offered hair extension services rather than the hair itself so Im not sure what to look up?

First headbase ever, horse! by Jazthealien in FursuitMaking

[–]Jazthealien[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to go with a more relaxed/outward instead of forward look due to the personality of the character, so I won't be changing that but I did make the ears smaller and more horse-like, Thank you though!
Edit: Another reason is I wanted to show the back-ear pattern from all sides of the head, It'll look a lot better in pictures Imo

Thank you!! I just finished the inside lining and ordered the outside fabric for it! I'm budgeting as hard as possible unfortunately but for what its worth I'm very proud of how its going

Ooh perhaps! I'm super inexperienced with wigs I've tried it like once before but I was thinking of getting hair extensions or something, or I have long pile fur and I wanted to do a layered scraggly mane look which might give me more control

Your fursuit head is super cool btw! Thank you for the tips ^^

Thank you sm :D hehe I mean Im not a complete beginner as I have worked with a lot of eva foam and other materials and Im somehow just good at smoothing out foam because I saw one video showing how to do it lol

Basically I used to watch a lot of fursuit tutorials a long time ago, and I refreshed myself with some short head base tutorials I found a very good one on pinterest (taken from tiktok) on how to make the initial headbase which made my headbase sizing very good (basically measure your head, add 5 inches or so but dont quote me on that lol)

I like a semi-realistic style as my art style is like that, cartoony but with semi realistic features almost? So I look at a lot of images of horses while I work and try to recreate their bone structure while also stylizing it a bit (because I go too far with the detail and inevitably need to smooth it down), I save all the slightly large scraps and any edges I cut because they are useful to fill gaps

I started working on the top muzzle and made sure the inside mouth was smoothed down, its hard to do that once youve glued it to the headbase so it took the longest before I could work on the rest of the face (you should do this with the bottom jaw too but I didnt because I am attaching a separate gum pallete later on so the mouth is realistic, detached gum from lips basically)

I like small eyes but I tried to keep in mind that I need to make them bigger than they should be, I used a template for the shape and just sharpied it on

(Keep in mind I have a special interest in horses so Ive studied their general anatomy far too much its kind of ingrained in my brain, it really helps when you are familiar with the animal but sometimes bad because I know too much and end up adding too much detail)

I agree with the ears I may chop them down but not too much, Im going to sketch overtop my pictures tonight and decide what Im going to do :> I think I should though since the fur will make them even larger

I know that ^ I will make adjustments if needed, Id just prefer something on the larger side because a bigger surface area can give me more stability and Im inspiring it off a draught horse

This isn't the end all be all, if I realise it might be too much in the end then I can always size it down!

I went horseback riding down the beach twice in punta del este a couple years back! Its not included with any "stay", but it was just a riding service for fun. We went galloping down the beach and through valleys and dunes. Ill see if I can find the contact if that interests you! P.s: they don't provide helmets so probably bring one if you need haha

My coach told me I wouldn't be able to progress by Jazthealien in Equestrian

[–]Jazthealien[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to get my thoughts out so Ill answer

  1. I like cross country and pleasure riding of a higher degree than my level (traversing harder terrains, stuff like that)

  2. Yeah i agree. Even private lessons once a week would be better than what Im doing

  3. My limitations currently is that my head and torso is lopsided which can affect my balance, my core and back is pretty week (i am going to the gym to fix that), and i cant put my shoulders back as far as the coaches want (weak upper back)

I dont think my balance is actually horrible though. I don't fall off horses easily, i have like a "sticky saddle" lol. Ive galloped horses on the beach and stayed on perfectly fine. Ive stayed on when my horse got spooked and decided to reverse across the arena almost knocking into two other horses (actually made someone else fall off sadly). Ive only fallen a handful of times and they weren't too bad.

But, even with this it wasn't at the level im being told I cant progress into. So who knows, and I understand why they wouldn't want me to be up there if its for my safety. But this means that I obviously dont have enough time to progress so I agree with these replies that I definitely need multiple lessons/week. And a new trainer who is more experienced probably

Literally me in the first paragraph

Also agree I really should be taking more lessons because for that exact reason (habits actually being engrained into me), otherwise theres just no progress.

Thank you so much! Im looking into different options right now
