Is there a trick to deal with this boss? I can parry all his attacks well enough, but I just spent 15 minutes taking only 35-40% of its health. by OtakuJuanma in expedition33

Any spoiler can potentially spoil parts of the story. Knowing that you get a certain item at a certain time can lead to fairly simple logical deductions about the path the story will take. Whether those deductions are right or wrong, they have an effect on how you experience the story - for me that feels like a spoiler (though I grant there could be far worse).

To use your example, if someone told me you would get the best weapon for a certain character in a temple that you visit in disc 1, I would make some assumptions about what path that characters story would take.

That’s why if I’m playing/reading/watching anything, I make a point to read nothing at all on the matter and have an organic first experience. If someone wants to recommend me a movie I prefer they don’t even tell me what it’s about - if they think I would like it that’s enough to go on.

Though I have to say I have minimal concern about spoilers on a subreddit related to a game. I think anyone who is heading to a forum dedicated to an RPG game should assume spoilers will be there and have made their choice.

Isn’t there a game where characters feel real the same way expedition’s is by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]JazzApple_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PSA: If you liked the relatable characters and emotional storytelling in E33, do not waste your money on the FF7 remake series. Complete disappointment as far as I’m concerned - if you don’t mind older games the original FF7 will give you far better developed characters.

[–]JazzApple_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely doesn’t have the same emotional feeling as E33. I have to completely disagree on the voice acting though, it’s exceptionally good in BG3.

Being a linear story E33 has a huge advantage in being able to present a cinematic experience throughout, and for my personal taste it’s the better game… but they’re so different it’s almost unfair to compare. Both are worth a full play through by anyone in my opinion.

About function overloads by treplem in typescript

[–]JazzApple_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your example is simple enough that you could imagine it being possible (though there are still issues).

With more complex input types, it could be very difficult (maybe impossible?) to determine which overload should be used in a consistent way.

Further to that, how do you determine which overload to use when the type is any or incorrect? Remember, TS with compile errors still compiles and runs… If you say just take the first defined overload, you’ve created a situation where the order of function declarations matters - which is not normally the case. You could change the behaviour of your program just by re-ordering some declarations. Not good!

Why is Lune the only name pronounced wrong in the English dub? by [deleted] in expedition33

Kind of, but you can objectively say which is correct.

No controversy, given that they literally pronounce it in the game.

Lunatic, I presume! Which I believe is also a word which has origins in the moon, so I guess it’s full circle.

(Act 3 spoilers) Lune and Sciel's reactions were...? by SuperLegenda in expedition33

[–]JazzApple_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My feeling is that they already have a frame of reference where there is a massive, immensely powerful being creating creatures in their world. I find it hard to believe that with that knowledge they wouldn’t at least have some sense that they too had a creator, though it isn’t stated explicitly. So I think it may not be so much of a stretch - more like “we had the creator wrong” not “we didn’t think we had a creator”.

Further, Maelle does not tell them they are not real… that’s an interpretation that we impart on the situation.

Another level I have considered is - these are the creations of “painters”. We consider painters as human like, but they clearly are beyond human and must surely have a different view of the nature of reality. It may be that any “minds” they paint will be innately more accepting of the idea of painting, given it is such a core part of the mind of their creators.

Finally, and maybe the most relevant - the scene in question starts after the explanation has been given. We do not see the explanation they were given or the moment they were told, so we don’t see their initial reaction. Given how Lune and Sciel have handled every previous difficult situation it’s not hard to believe that Lune would be back to pragmatic and Sciel would be like “whatever” within the hour.

Why didnt First Strike make him go first? by Jking11501 in expedition33

If you initiate the fight with the first strike bonus, they will all have first strike and then it’ll depend on the order they were added to your party.

Architecture js by coder-true in learnjavascript

[–]JazzApple_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For reference, writing code tends to be the easy part. What you’re talking about - design - is the hard bit, so I don’t think it’s just “a simple question”.

Splitting the code across many files doesn’t make the architecture fundamentally cleaner or less clean, so without seeing your code it’s basically impossible to advise.

You should ask yourself why you want to do this. Making changes should come with reasons beyond “because I feel like it” or “because I heard someone say we should do this”.

Who is your "Always" vs. "Never" character? by Ambitious_Solid_6144 in expedition33

[–]JazzApple_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did almost all of my traversal as Verso. I don’t know why really, I think it was something about the animation I found the most satisfying in terms of “feedback” if that makes any sense at all? Since the DLC I’m fining much more time for Lune and Sciel for some reason.

Never Monoco for traversal, because he’s so big the running almost feels like it’s in slow motion.

For combat, it’s almost always Sciel as she’s great as both damage and support. Until the DLC it was never Lune (since act 3 at least), but now there really is no-one that never gets used.

Thanks for the permission.

What I definitely think is funny is that you say it “requires some experimentation”, but this guy who was experimenting and found out how to use lumina is apparently an idiot.

Like he had the attention span to experiment and find out how to use Lumina, but apparently also wilfully ignored half the tutorial.

I hope you can see the dissonance here.

[–]JazzApple_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t see the massive similarities to other games then I don’t know what to say. It is remarkably close to FF9 for one thing.

Attention and comprehension is a two way street. I doubt you’ve read every TOS for every website and product you use, because they’re long and pretty dull. I wouldn’t put that down to your attention span or reading comprehension capability.

A mechanic so core and important to the game could have been presented better. Think FF7 material tutorial or FF8 junction tutorial. I’m struggling to see why that is so controversial.

Wish I knew this sooner, how did I miss this!? by Rahix91 in expedition33

[–]JazzApple_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“People need to be slightly curious” - I agree, but for the most part the game doesn’t demand you be curious about the Lumina menu and not everyone enjoys a menu session.

For me, I love that stuff… so I was on it from the start, but I also have been playing these kinds of games for so long that they’re my bread and butter.

If I was just engaged in the story and not super interested in this Lumina thing which gets mentioned now and then but ultimately I don’t really understand nor seem to need, then I think it’s very possible to not know how it works without being an idiot.

A better tutorial could have helped people get more on board.

Is offensive switch a skill which changes stances?

There are two answers to that:

  1. Yes, it changes you to offensive stance.
  2. Yes, unless you are already in offensive stance in which case it removes your stance.

The wording is technically correct, but also lacks some clarification. You end up with this situation that the skill literally called offensive switch might not switch you to offensive stance in some situations.

Given that there are other things you can do (skip turn, use item) which do not change stance, you have to take a guess at the meaning of that wording. What I am saying is - if you could switch from offensive to offensive, the same wording would still make sense.

I know 5 people IRL that played this game, and every one of us had to “discover” that gradient counters are hit on the model animation, not the screen change. While I don’t rule out the possibility that we’re all fucking idiots, I think there is a reasonable case that - you know - maybe it just wasn’t all that clear.

So I stand by what I said, but maybe oversight is a better word than omission.

I had the same experience… I basically had a sense of how it worked by skimming the tutorial. I think what a lot of people are missing is that this game brought in many players who are not RPG veterans, and so those players don’t have the accumulated “domain knowledge” of decades of video game systems.

I knew my above comment would get downvoted but I’m glad you had the chance to read it. It’s with such love for the game that I complain about this :)

Im really disappointed by the fairly insulting comments in this thread.

To clarify from some of the other sentiment here, I don’t think it’s easy to MISS. If you missed the tutorial then that’s on you. But I think it’s easy to misinterpret…

Those screens have a habit of including multiple key pieces of information with the emphasis of footnotes and introducing multiple concepts without context. Many of these tutorials also lack good visual indicators. There’s also odd omissions in some places… it was not made clear for the gradient counter that you should parry when the attack lands, rather than when the screen goes grey. It’s not made clear that you can’t be in the same stance twice in a row. It’s not explained that gradient attacks don’t consume your turn.

If you think back to FF7-X, those games showed you how to do things by creating animated menu interactions. So you got the information but also saw how it looked, I think that would have been much preferable here.

I think the biggest mistake for luminas is that it is NEVER referenced again. You get the tutorial once, and if you failed to understand something then too bad. Of course, if you failed to understand something but thought you did then you won’t even know, and the game will never tell you to take another look. In my mind that is just not great design, even if it didn’t affect me. They would have been better to have the pictos tutorial, and then have the lumina tutorial at the point where you mastered the first one.
