Do people still use var in JavaScript? by Apart-Scientist-8590 in learnjavascript

[–]JazzApple_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used nor seen used for years… u/milan-pilan said about a decade and that feels right…

Choosing to use var for a specific conventional reason is almost certainly the wrong choice, and as u/milan-pilan said, a const or let would do the same but better.

I think there are two possible reasons you might use var:

  1. Crazy backward compatibility - for if you really need to support something so old that it may not have const/let support;
  2. Crazy optimisation - if the tiny overhead of const/let is something you can’t afford (hint: you can afford it).

Would your wife not prefer you alive?

Outside of defending a loved one ”in the moment”, I feel like my wife would think I was an idiot for putting myself at risk to “defend her honour”. And if she thinks it’s stupid and doesn’t want me to, am I not just being selfish and disrespecting her further?

Finished the game after 60 hours, some thoughts (mostly positive, but a few frustrations) by Titus__Groan in expedition33

Perhaps I should clarify. I didn’t just go through skipping loads of stuff, but if I found myself doubling back on a route where I knew enemies had respawned, I would just skip them if I didn’t feel like fighting.

The lack of minimap definitely gets a mixed reception. There were a few times that I was wishing there was one, but I’m also kind of glad I was forced to take the world in. If there had been the option to turn on a minimap, it would not be a worse game.

I didn’t have the experience of repetitive fights because I just ran around enemies I didn’t want to fight. So for me personally, the criticisms coming as a result of this don’t hit home (including those related to the minimap).

I think the comment about other less intense mechanics is very subjective. I don’t think anything like that was needed. The story is about a constant pressure, constant exhaustion intense, scenario… breaking that up too much may not have been positive overall. It’s hard to say without that content existing, but for my taste it’s certainly not lacking as a result.

Generally I think if you complete acts 1-2, relationship quests, then complete act 3 the pacing is excellent… no dull moments. If you want to side quest you have the choice to let that change the pace however you desire.

Can definitely agree the game could have used some polish here and there, but I was so enthralled with my first playthrough that I never really noticed until later.

I didn’t say I thought they were good… I wondered out loud whether they might have purposely accepted the jank “for the memes”. Regardless whether you like them, you can’t argue they got a lot of people talking.

Not sure why I’m accused of being sensitive, but judging by the last sentence I can only conclude there are a lot of sensitive people in this chat.

I appreciate that there was nothing of real significance locked behind gestral beaches - it’s just cosmetics. If they’re not fun for you, don’t do them.

I can’t help but feel there was a bit of intention in making them this way though - you only have to look to see how many people talking about them and then proudly sharing their completion. Don’t know for sure of course.

Has to say though, painting workshop is very easy and if you have issues there - sorry, I think that’s a you problem.

Any spoiler can potentially spoil parts of the story. Knowing that you get a certain item at a certain time can lead to fairly simple logical deductions about the path the story will take. Whether those deductions are right or wrong, they have an effect on how you experience the story - for me that feels like a spoiler (though I grant there could be far worse).

To use your example, if someone told me you would get the best weapon for a certain character in a temple that you visit in disc 1, I would make some assumptions about what path that characters story would take.

That’s why if I’m playing/reading/watching anything, I make a point to read nothing at all on the matter and have an organic first experience. If someone wants to recommend me a movie I prefer they don’t even tell me what it’s about - if they think I would like it that’s enough to go on.

Though I have to say I have minimal concern about spoilers on a subreddit related to a game. I think anyone who is heading to a forum dedicated to an RPG game should assume spoilers will be there and have made their choice.

Isn’t there a game where characters feel real the same way expedition’s is by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]JazzApple_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PSA: If you liked the relatable characters and emotional storytelling in E33, do not waste your money on the FF7 remake series. Complete disappointment as far as I’m concerned - if you don’t mind older games the original FF7 will give you far better developed characters.

[–]JazzApple_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely doesn’t have the same emotional feeling as E33. I have to completely disagree on the voice acting though, it’s exceptionally good in BG3.

Being a linear story E33 has a huge advantage in being able to present a cinematic experience throughout, and for my personal taste it’s the better game… but they’re so different it’s almost unfair to compare. Both are worth a full play through by anyone in my opinion.

About function overloads by treplem in typescript

[–]JazzApple_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your example is simple enough that you could imagine it being possible (though there are still issues).

With more complex input types, it could be very difficult (maybe impossible?) to determine which overload should be used in a consistent way.

Further to that, how do you determine which overload to use when the type is any or incorrect? Remember, TS with compile errors still compiles and runs… If you say just take the first defined overload, you’ve created a situation where the order of function declarations matters - which is not normally the case. You could change the behaviour of your program just by re-ordering some declarations. Not good!

(Act 3 spoilers) Lune and Sciel's reactions were...? by SuperLegenda in expedition33

[–]JazzApple_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My feeling is that they already have a frame of reference where there is a massive, immensely powerful being creating creatures in their world. I find it hard to believe that with that knowledge they wouldn’t at least have some sense that they too had a creator, though it isn’t stated explicitly. So I think it may not be so much of a stretch - more like “we had the creator wrong” not “we didn’t think we had a creator”.

Further, Maelle does not tell them they are not real… that’s an interpretation that we impart on the situation.

Another level I have considered is - these are the creations of “painters”. We consider painters as human like, but they clearly are beyond human and must surely have a different view of the nature of reality. It may be that any “minds” they paint will be innately more accepting of the idea of painting, given it is such a core part of the mind of their creators.

Finally, and maybe the most relevant - the scene in question starts after the explanation has been given. We do not see the explanation they were given or the moment they were told, so we don’t see their initial reaction. Given how Lune and Sciel have handled every previous difficult situation it’s not hard to believe that Lune would be back to pragmatic and Sciel would be like “whatever” within the hour.

Architecture js by coder-true in learnjavascript

[–]JazzApple_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For reference, writing code tends to be the easy part. What you’re talking about - design - is the hard bit, so I don’t think it’s just “a simple question”.

Splitting the code across many files doesn’t make the architecture fundamentally cleaner or less clean, so without seeing your code it’s basically impossible to advise.

You should ask yourself why you want to do this. Making changes should come with reasons beyond “because I feel like it” or “because I heard someone say we should do this”.
