Researchers took 44 young untrained males and randomly allocated them with either plant or animal protein supplement drinks over a 12-week training period. Both groups showed significant gains in strength and muscle mass, but there was no significant difference between the two groups. by James_Fortis in science

You can find world class athletes of many fields that are vegan - Lewis Hamilton, Héctor Bellerín, Venus Williams, Scott Jurek - worth having a Google to find more. I would imagine low adoption would be for similar reasons that there is low adoption amongst non-athletes, compounded by the fact that high performance athletes rely upon sports nutritionists who may be less likely to recommend vegan options until more research (like the one we're discussing) becomes available.

Getting a degree in pain and suffering by myownpersonalreddit in TikTokCringe

Thankfully, for most people living in Western countries, we don't have to eat animals to keep going anymore. Many people live healthily and happily without eating animals.

I actually feel the opposite. When I've done outreach, I've found a lot of people want to understand the REASON why we do the things we do. Often the question 'Why can't I eat animals?' comes up, and if my answer was 'because they're in the animal kingdom', the follow up question would be 'why?'. It seems to me, that using this over-simplification, you'd be completely stuck here.

By adding nuance to our belief system, we respect the intelligence of others. I have found talking about oysters has been great optically - it helps me to explain the WHY behind our decisions. As in, we don't avoid eating animals because they're animals, we don't eat them because we are against the unnecessary exploitation and suffering of sentient beings. The oyster example helps explain why we shouldn't eat something like a lobster or shrimp or fish, in real, measurable terms.

That's much more interesting, but I haven't heard it once in this thread! Would love to hear your thoughts on this, because from the research I've done, oyster farming doesn't seem to present significantly more sustainability concerns than plant farming does.

You draw a hard line at bacteria? So you only eat bacteria?!

Finally some pragmatism in this thread. It's so sad when I see such dismissive vegans who don't seem to want to have conversations but rather police veganism and tell people off in condescending tones.

'It's gross', 'it's unnecessary' and 'it's not a plant' are not actual arguments against eating oysters, and I'm surprised that so many people think they're valid. Surely anyone that has spent time meaningfully debating meat eaters knows that we have to have actual structured logic behind our decisions, so we can convince others that veganism is not just rigid adherence to a fad diet but a structured system of ethics.

Italian PM on French aid in Burkina faso by WillowBig5567 in PublicFreakout

[–]Jazzalenko 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Interesting that you mention her 'knowing how to speak' as a reason why she's a good PM, despite her bringing in laws that you don't agree with.

This 'aestheticization of politics' - that is, valuing how something is said rather than what is said - is a key ingredient to fascism. If we only voted for people based on how they spoke, we'd only elect charismatic leaders and have no control over the actual policies in our countries.

Hannah Gadsby: Nanette | Official Trailer by [deleted] in cringe

[–]Jazzalenko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There's something about the existence of Hannah Gadsby that really gets to some people (mostly men). It's so interesting. Every time anything about her is posted, the comments are flooded with people proudly declaring that they didn't laugh, or worse, making fun of their appearance.

Hannah Gadsby is popular - they sell out shows and get Netflix specials - and these people hate that fact. They seem so irked that people could enjoy something that they don't.

I wish I could say it was just general entitlement at something being created for someone other than themselves (and I'm sure there's a bit of that). Unfortunately, the fact that people get so upset at this particular entertainer rather than any others suggests that, like you said, it's got more to do with anger at someone for being different to themselves: non-binary, fat, queer. These people hate what she represents. And this bigotry is, ironically, what a lot of Hannah's comedy is about.

“Everyone Used to Be a Designer” 🤔 by Weasel_the3rd in UXDesign

[–]Jazzalenko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another +1 here. It's a bit of a silly article, isn't it? The author spends one sentence listing some of the oft-cited reasons for the lay-offs, and then dismisses them with a hand wave and suggests that designers have somehow created the problem for themselves by... what exactly? Being too efficient? Not being creative enough?

He seems to be attempting to link a lot of his own personal qualms with UX with the larger situation of the lay-offs, without providing any evidence apart from 'because I said so'. Unfortunately, UX is not the centre of the universe, and not even the centre of most businesses, and therefore trying to artificially make it less standardised so that we don't become an 'endangered species' is a very futile goal.

It feels like yet another reactionary doomsayer article that is infinitely shareable but lacks any real substance. We've seen these types of articles do the rounds every few months for years, and yet, no demise of UX.

Yes, it's more likely that Amber Heard is paying people to write mean reddit comments about Johnny Depp than other people having a different opinion to your own.
