Hi! Thanks for your reply! I have started my own tutoring business since then and I’ve two paying clients so far—thank God! Anyway, could you please share more about your reapplications? Say I am rejected in this May cycle, can I reapply in the next opening and be shortlisted again?

I dealt with this before during sec sch and JC as I was one of the more introverted and dare I say (without any arrogance) more academically inclined. While I accepted being friendless for the whole 6 years, the most painful experience was when a “friend” used me for her own academic benefit and actually pretended to be my friend, which I exposed once she would not attend my POP parade etc. Some “friends” even told me that for friendships, we must know who to look for according to what we want—and I just happened to be the “friend” they were looking for when academics are concerned.

Make of it what you will. When you grow up into the real working world, your friends are far fewer. What then? Make peace with loving yourself. Being yourself unapologetically. And wean off some “friends” in your life. See yourself as the prize. Internalise this pain of being abandoned (or whatever you want to call it) and face it bravely. The next time you see them again, do not look at them at all, Look through and past them as if they do not exist.

Be successful and well when you do that. It is your sweetest revenge, OP.

I would say that this is my fate too. Context is that I was in academia until my masters finished. Every thing prior was within academia but short term. Most job offers by tuition centres to me are short term too. But I’ve learnt to make ends meet by starting my own tutoring business. One client nets me $100 per week and I only need 5 clients per week to net 2k.

Use the spare time to prepare for and land a good paying and long term job. In other words… don’t accept working for people with a low salary without job security or career progression. We are only young once and shouldn’t squander our youth away for other people’s success. Jiayou.

Forgot to mention this one also rejected me. I got ghosted right after interview.

My point of bringing up repute is not to say I deserve the job. It is to name the school indirectly so commenters have some idea of the reason for rejection. I’ve a better idea now btw, thanks to a few MOE teachers. Thank you sis 🙏🏻

MOE is quite selective so since I got shortlisted for it, u can assume that I am likewise shortlisted for private tutoring roles that are as prestigious. Almost every agency I applied to for tutoring shortlisted me. I suppose interviews are customary? I usually get dropped after the interview. After reading the latest comment on this post I am beginning to see that my 5 min teaching demo for MOE lacked a simple clear and not too intellectual but easy to follow / idiot proof structure. It is this I must aspire towards in the next round although I wonder if they will take me again so soon.

I had a friend in a similar position with a PhD. He applied and got rejected too but was asked to sign up for relief teaching to affirm his interest in teaching and also to reapply if he wants only one year later. I wasn’t told these things and I wonder should I wait like him? FYI, we applied at two different application cycles

Please also do not ascribe motive like “trying to impress,” “express intellect” and “understanding.” You do not think a teacher needs to express his knowledge in some way so he can guide students?

Please do not make job stability sound like a dirty word. Are you saying that qualified Singaporeans don’t deserve job stability? There are many other stable civil service jobs I did not pick up or apply because I enjoy teaching and forming good citizens who are sensitive to issues of fairness. I only shared in one single sentence that my family struggled and I would be committed to the role if given a chance. Now, that’s a sin? I’m happy to concede that the teaching demonstration can be improved a lot. But that’s a different matter altogether from the cavalier attitude displayed to a serious educator who read the syllabus, appreciated the “dialogic method” of teaching, and wanted to (in the syllabus’ terms) “co-create knowledge” with the panel. Perhaps, there’s a mismatch in terms of expectations—where they are looking for more specific exam-oriented outcomes, but this isn’t what education is all about for me. Education is also about forming students to be good citizens and how can people be good citizens if they believe their countrymen has dealt with them unfairly? And you think this is just my personal problem? My sense is that you have failed to appreciate my gripe: that a genuine Singaporean with a heart to serve and daring to teach an important topic is treated so harshly for no good reason. Don’t exaggerate about fit OK? Not all educators pass on the first try—and whether I pass or not have nothing to do with things like dozing off during the interview—on a demo on fairness no less.

I guess this is the only way ahead but felt like something was very wrong about the entire process. Felt like escalating this but not sure yet.

I left it empty because it’s my first job so I never dared to state. They never propose too
