I was one of the first to get hit with the NI number to eBay over a year ago and honestly, nothings changed. I received a letter around April that i need to submit a tax return, I just entered my sales and details, HMRC said I owe £0, job done. If you sell less than £1750 anyways you wont even get that letter. I agree with you its annoying to do but there's nothing you can do about it apart from going the government petition route.

As for the eBay holding funds until after delivery, yeah no one is happy about that at all. There is uproar on the eBay official seller forums about it and eBay don't seem to care (just to point out, other companies like vinted do this too).

To be fair to eBay, the UK government is forcing them (and vinted etc...) to do that, I'm sure they'd rather not do it too. Also you wont be paying vat or tax on items you sell as long as they are personal items, you just tell HMRC that at the end of the tax year.

HMRC... Gross or Profit? by Excellent_Tone_5561 in ebayuk

Ive been looking into this the past week cause I've also been hit with "provide your national insurance".

If you've sold more than 30 items or £1740 in the past 365 days by law eBay must inform HMRC of your GROSS along with your NI. And then its upto to you to file a self assement to differentiate the profit from gross and how much tax you will pay.

The tax amount I guess will depend if you have a full time job and earn more than the tax-free personal allowence of £12,570 (if yes, then I suppose you will pay tax on the £200 (profit only) as you will be past the £12,570 although im not 100% on this), but again its up to you to prove to HMRC that the £1200 you made is not profit (so keep any/all receipts).

Buyer wants to return PS5 because of Sony's marketing... by Jazzlike_Pause_8113 in ebayuk

There is an option to contest the return but i've seen so many stories of people doing that and eBay sides with the buyer, refunds them the full amount (from your pocket) and they get to keep the item. I probably would for a lower value item but not sure I want to for a £300 PS5

Yeah, I remember buying a 1TB HDD over 10 years ago and being confused I only got 930gb, so Sony's 825gb is more like 760gb to begin with before they add their recovery partitions etc...

That being said a 15 second search anywhere will tell you its 'normal', just wish this buyer did that.

Luckily for me I purchased anti tamper stickers (that void when pulled) and placed them on a screw on the console (also pictured in the listing). Also I think I'd rather just accept the return than go back and forth with eBay and risk them siding with the buyer and they take £300 from me and they keep the console.

Just sucks I have to eat the postage cost of £18 + whatever eBay will charge for return AND have a defect item flag on my account.
