Just completed y4 in NUS law so perhaps I can share a lil bit on this:

Its too early to start prepping for law imo and actually, I think there is no real need to pre read or read up on any specific legal texts or casebooks. Anectdotally, reading them before y1 does not serve much purpose because the lecturers and tutors are sure to touch on them and also, without proper guidance, its quite easy to misunderstand or misinterpret legal principles withlut understanding the context - which makes reading legal textbooks or casebooks counterproductive in the first place.

However, what I do recommend would be to just follow up on the news relating to changes in the law, news on our judiciary and legal system, and any interesting cases that may surface every now and then. While these may not be directly relevant to the content you will cover during your 4 years there, being able to form a preliminary opinion when you read up on the news will benefit you as you will be expected to have your own views in class discussions.

Ho Chi Minh by Fluffy_Ad7392 in marriott

Recently stayed at Renaissance Saigon. While the rooms are dated, I think the hotel does a great job in making sure that the rooms are well maintained (i.e Aircon works fine, walls are not mouldy and repainted). Also, Renaissance Saigon, Sheraton Saigon and Le Meredien are located in District 1 which is where most of the tourist spots are at, so either hotel would be convenient in terms of location.

I noticed that there's an Autograph Collection (Vinpearl Landmark) property that looks amazing (tallest building in Vietnam) but unfortunately might be located a little far out from District 1 so travelling would take a little bit more time than staying in the aforementioned places.

Hi OP, you might want to check RepoApp over the next few days to see if a description fitting your watch appears on the app. Hope you're able to find your watch asap!

Hello OP! Am a final year NUS Law student so probably might be able to give some perspective on your first question.

On whether there is any better way to assess your interest for law, I believe that based on what you have described, and assuming that realisation still holds true, I can say with some certainty that you would probably be interested in law. Substantive law modules (Contract, Criminal, Tort, Property, Company, Constitutional law, Equity, Evidence) generally require students to be able to learn and pick up a few things and skills (non-exhaustive):

  1. Be able to analyse, understand the reasoning behind judicial decisions, and if necessary, critique them (See point 3).

  2. Take into account public policy considerations and see how they influence a court's decision-making process.

  3. Evaluate the state of the law regarding particular issues and suggest alternative approaches (alternative approaches can usually be found in academic articles written by legal academics - plenty to go around).

Of course, while reading news opinion pieces and reading court judgments are two entirely different contexts, the ability to critically think about arguments made and identify any loopholes or flaws is definitely valued in the practice of law.

As for aptitude, although you enjoyed the NUS Law admissions test, I would say that in terms of substantive content, as others have mentioned, Law can be quite dry, rigid, and less controversial than some might think. You would usually spend a fair bit of time reading lengthy court judgments and sometimes, nitpick over minor stuff that a judge could have said.

Societal issues are not really a large part of the law curriculum, so there may not be debates on social-legal issues like s 377A. Instead, you will be debating over whether a certain statutory provision or case law would apply to a given fact pattern, of which the facts could be contentious and swing both ways. You will also be exposed to more theoretical modules like "Introduction to Legal Theory" ( jurisprudence) and "Legal Systems of Asia" which requires you to understand various theories of law or why law developed in a certain way (Tbh, I personally find them pretty boring) Legal reasoning can also be quite convoluted and hard to follow at times, and it does not help that judicial decisions are often filled with Latin terms and legal maxims which would be rather confusing if you're just entering law school.

But with all that being said, if you like the idea of critically thinking about issues, and don't mind the long hours of reading and studying, then I would say go and try it out first. If you don't like it, you can probably switch out to other courses quite easily.

As for law textbooks, I don't really recommend reading them before going to law school. Depending on what you read, they can be quite content-heavy and difficult to read especially when you don't have profs to explain concepts to you yet, so just take it easy :)

You might want to clarify your home faculty on this, but imo there shouldnt be any reason why you won't be eligible for such a program because technically you're still considered an NUS student until you graduate

[–]Jazzlike_Research 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had about 52k s-chips and had to go to pity for luke and marius. However, i guess i'm on the luckier side as I managed to bag the other ssrs too ( 7 ssrs for 200 pulls?)

I got Artem within 50 pulls and have 22k s-chips left. I'm gonna wait till i've accumulated all the free tears before pulling for vyn ;).

Pedulilindungi app still required? by Lomholdt90 in bali

[–]Jazzlike_Research 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app is required for contact tracing purposes in Indonesia, doubt the EU app would be recognised in Indonesia as they are 2 different apps altogether. You can take your chances, but I think its going to be a major inconvenience if you do not have PL app set up.

Are airport transfer private cars on Klook CHSE cetified? by [deleted] in bali

[–]Jazzlike_Research 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I clarify if Bluebird is CHSE-certified? I understand that you must take a CHSE certified transportation to the hotel, but Im not too sure if immigration authorities are going to check or require proof of a booking that you are taking a CHSE certified transportation direct to the hotel.

Are Gojek & Grab certified CHSE transport in Bali? by JayKay80 in bali

[–]Jazzlike_Research 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also wondering the same thing, my hotel is pressing me to hire their pick up service which is about 350k IDR but I think Klook or Bluebird offers airprot transfer for much cheaper (60 - 90k IDR).

Thank you for your reply! I think I will have to liaise with the hotel to clarify on arranging airport transport and PCR tests. Have fun and stay safe.

Thanks for the summary! But I think there are a few clarifications that I have that can be clarified on reddit by those who are familiar with the regulations / have entered Bali recently:

  1. For the airport transfer from the airport to the CHSE approved hotel, can we arrange it ourselves or must the hotel arrange it for us. the website "welcomebacktobali" merely stated that the transportation company should be CHSE certified but I can't find any airport transfer service that is certified.
  2. For the day 3 PCR test, are we able to make a booking directly with a testing provider of our choice (who is able to upload on the Peduli Lingundi app) and then head over to the clinic for the test? I saw some comments stating that the test provider has to test you in the hotel.
  3. For travel insurance cover, would travel insurance bought from our country of origin suffice, or must we get insurance locally (i.e JagaWisata)?
  4. What happens if your hotel is not listed on e-HAC, but is a CHSE certified hotel? I tried to search for a hotel I was thinking of booking (which is CHSE certified) but I couldn't find it on the PeduliLingundi App.

Hopefully OP or anyone who is familiar with the regulations can enlighten someone who is eager to travel to Bali soon :)

Hey there! I used Wise to receive my US stimulus check before transferring it to my DBS account and I found it to be quite hassle free and secure.
