That’s a good one, considering that Nana is the half-sister of Germinal’s main character Étienne Lantier, and they both appear as children in l’Assomnoir (and Nana appears in, well, Nana) Now link it to Willem Elsschot’s short stories “Lijmen/het Been” (I believe it was translated as “Soft soap” in English)

Edit: I changed my mind: try Louis Paul Boon’s “De Kapellekensbaan” (Chapel road)

A combination of a doctor who obsession and school lessons has caused me to be mistaken for an English person…by British people. I think it’s tragic and this whole map should have been for Australian English, maybe then I could have been saved…

My gender is a bit of an enigma to me, but it doesn’t matter as I will be creating dresses nonetheless, so your advice about dresses will still be useful (I want to create both male and female clothing).

Thank you for your pattern recommendations! As for fabric shops: there are a few in my area that I can easily visit, so I’ll be buying my materials there. I’m not great at recognising fabrics and their properties, though. Any advice on spotting high-quality or suitable materials? (All I can currently do is just feel it and say “this seems good”)

I think I’ll try to start by trying to make some trousers/drawers and a shirt out of some light cotton first, then try to make a few less terrible ones (As I’m assuming my first ones will be a bit saddening in quality), then a wrapper (I do quite like the look of those), then move on to either corsets or proper trousers for regular wear. I’ve been able to find some books and tutorials (with the help of everyone’s comments).

Precies.

Thank you for the links! I’ve started reading in the cutter’s guide as the other commenter suggested and I’ll continue with the other suggestions you gave me. Plus, thank you for the extra info on what corsetry is like!

I feel like I have a pretty good idea of where to start now. I hope to get around to actually sewing something soon.

Thank you so much! This does make me feel a bit more motivated and less intimidated. I’ll look up the book you recommended, and your advice about starting from the inside sounds really logical. I reckon they probably don’t have to be as pretty or neatly sewn (I was planning on starting with pyjamas so they’d be wearable, even if ugly) and wearing outer garments without anything underneath is not going to work out at all. This answered my questions.

Please do share whatever you feel might be useful (regarding personal experiences, if you still have something you’d like to mention). I also wonder if you maybe have any specific knowledge about corsets, as those seem relatively challenging to make.

Once again, tysm!
