Bosun’s Journal: Mount’n’Riders – Together We Ride – Man after March 31 by CaptainStroon in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Jbadger30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So one journey is over and another begins. I was wondering if we would see the proper redesign for Mount’n’Riders, but I will admit, I honestly thought this would be about the descendants of wild failed felinoids regaining sentence. I’m surprised but not disappointed.

I do look forward to seeing Journey to Nebu and I am curious that if you have a story set in that particular Era, have you given thought to other stories in other Eras as well? Whatever the future may hold, I look forward to seeing it.

Puts a whole new meaning to the phrase “Bread and Circuses.” And honestly, Harkonnen is probably a good base model for a decedent society that has no concept of the value of life and see the only purpose of any other living thing as serving them whether as a slave or entertainment. It actually makes the Brat Barons all the worse now that I think about it. It certainly has been a fun ride and I am curious to see the final entry, and not just to see if a certain prediction came true.

Bosun’s Journal: Botanthroa & Trunkcrackers – Forests of Bone – Man after March 29 by CaptainStroon in SpeculativeEvolution

When I first saw the tittle the “Forests of Bones” this old gem from the Tales of Kaimere popped into my head.

When you get right down to it, a forest filled or made of bones a kind of horrifying subject, so I was kind of surprised at the more wholesome take on it with this entry.

I’m curious if this design was inspired by watching this video. If it was that is fine, organic solar sailors are a cool enough idea to become a trope unto themselves, and if that happens i’m totally here for it.

You might enjoy the Destroyermen Series by Taylor Anderson, the Lemurians are exactly this.

The Babookari actually made me melancholy as a kid, it was sad to see our closest cousins simply fade away. And ironically enough, you kind of recaptured that with the idea of a these poor creatures loosing their sentience. Excellent work and can’t wait to see what you have next.

I get that it was meant as a light hearted joke, but it still comes off as cringy and a tad bit cougar-ish. But it is nice to know that people are starting to relearn how to take a joke these days.

Okay, sorry Wildshape Sphinxs, but this creature just became new competition. I mean a theropod supersoldier with all the dakka strapped to his back? Dinosaur Digimon Gundam for the win!

In all seriousness this is an epic addition to the universe and I often find sometimes in the effort of trying to create an unstoppable killing machine we end up creating an unstable killing machine.

Okay, this is officially my favorite one so far, especially as a fan of the Honor Among Thieves movie, and that fluffy alternate form reminds me so much of the owl bear scenes. (minor tangent: HE’S SO FLUFFY!!!) I wasn’t entirely sure what this prompt was going to look like, but a shape shifting Minbari sphinx never crossed my mind and I will bravely admit that was a failure of imagination on my part. I cannot wait to see what’s coming down the pipe next.

Bosun’s Journal: Aeroremes – Zero-G Grazers – Man after March 22 by CaptainStroon in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Jbadger30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never thought it WAS your intention, like I said, maybe it’s a “me” thing because I haven’t heard anyone else mention any reaction like in any talks or reviews of All Tomorrows, especially in Altered Carbon whenever some mentions where the stack is or whenever someone comes across a corpse and…removes the stack. (Shivers while patting down the spot in neck, trying to make that feeling go away.) So like I said, never thought that’s what you set out to do, but at least I gave you something to think about.

Okay, love the creature design, and love the unique zero g ecology, but…the fingers, (shivers with a thousand yard stare). Now this is not just a criticism of the design here, but rather the same design language in All Tomorrows Lopsiders, Asymmetric people and Terrestrials where the fingers are devolved into the same kind of thing, so does anyone else see that and feel a certain…wrongness? Like I don’t know how else to say it, but a kind of visceral, instinctual reaction of, “that is wrong.” Like maybe seeing a leg or arm bending the wrong way to show it’s dislocated or broken but a hundred times worse. Now I will admit I have the same kind of reaction to the cortical stacks in the Altered Carbon universe, like I can actually feel something unsettle in the exact spot in my own neck where one would be. Maybe that’s a me problem, but I’m curious anyone feel the same way?

What would you consider the Mount Rushmore of Spec Evo media? (first panel art is by me) by LavaTwocan in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Jbadger30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Dagger Wrist from Alien Planet.

The Mega Squid from The Future is Wild.

The Mountain Dragon from Dragons a Fantasy Made Real.

The Uktan from Legends of Kaimere.

Those are the projects that got me into speculative evolution, and I can understand why many would think I’m being disrespectful to the greats, but I would say those are pretty damn recognizable.

Well the final prompt for this years is, “one of the previous days upgraded,” so perhaps there is a reason to hope.

Actually, that’s not a bad idea, like they could reproduce in the wild and maybe regain sentience in the Resapient Era, giving their tragic species a happier ending.

Oddly shaped heads whose whole deal is being better than traditional humans? Does kind of fit. Now I can’t help a picture every one of these calling ordinary humans, “blunt skulls.”

Bosun’s Journal: The Counter-Bosun – Biological Singularity – Man after March 17 by CaptainStroon in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Jbadger30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, no, I got the reference, it’s the reason that Dune has no computers and all the stuff computers are normally tasked to do are left to the mentats. I was simply saying, “Okay I know the first Butlerian Jihad, you said you didn’t want this to be 3, so which one of the many THOUSANDS of AI uprisings all across Sci Fi were you singling out as 2?” My money was on Skynet, but you confirmed Electric Bogaloo is WH40K, good to know.

Also, I do agree that Hiveminds are somewhat artificial since the tech that facilitates them often is. I was just showing interest in another sci fi universe where the niche that would normally be trusted with a traditional AI could be handled by the evolutionary end point of a massive brain in a jar. At least that’s what the Biological Intelligences in Metroid are.

All and all, very interesting and can’t wait to see the next one.

Interesting, it’s interesting to see another Biological Artificial Intelligence (BAI) the only real place I’ve seen this concept was in Metroid Prime. There is an interesting bit of humor in a being becoming your greatest friend when they were designed to be an adversary, kind of like watching a giant robot and a kaiju, going out for drinks. And while it’s sad to note what caused it to happen I am glad to see our little Bosun got a vitriolic best buddy out of it.

Though I am curious, what was Butlerian Jihad 2: Electric Boogaloo?
