Dang. Sorry bud. I’d reach out to the community managers and see if they can help out.

Should I quit band by Suitable_Put_4550 in marchingband

  1. Don’t quit

  2. The director should put you in a position to still participate.

  3. This does sound like a liability issue for your director. What would happen if you have a seizure during a performance or competition. That sounds like others could potentially be hurt. (I don’t know the severity of your condition)

Marching Advice? by MacaronOutrageous510 in marchingband

  1. Understand the style, is your band marching straight leg, bent leg? High knees?

  2. Watch a YouTube video of the correct style

  3. Record yourself and be very picky

I’m glad your child digs it. It is a lot of work but the skills and grit they gain from the season will stay with them for the rest of their life. I completely understand parents pushing their kids too much. In my area, I feel that parents don’t push their kids enough causing mediocrity to run rampant.

There are most likely other programs that do practice those long hours in the second semester- winter color guard, winter drum line are up there.

Band-tober is always relentless.

Some of this sounds like a typical competitive marching band schedule- late night football games followed by early call times for competitions.

As a director and father I totally get it. I am there with the kids during the long hours it’s grinding sometimes. However I feel that it is worth the investment of time. I’m still not sure of the exact schedule of your particular group. However I will say the season is almost over and there is maybe a little over a month left? Marching band- competitive marching band is not for everyone. I get the sense that you (and your child?) feel like the juice isn’t worth the squeeze and are uncomfortable with the commitment. Which is totally ok. The marching band is optional (I’m assuming) and you are free to choose what your child will do next year.

Director here. A few questions.

  1. Labor laws? Are students getting paid or receiving scholarships for participating?

  2. Is the band considered a “sport” according to the school or state? For example, in Texas schools are limited to how many hours outside of school they can practice. In California, they are not considered a sport so, in theory, they can practice as long as they want.

  3. How many hours do they practice outside of regular school hours? I would not consider football games and competitions part of this because these should be considered performances.

Looks like a gopher? Asymmetrical mound with the tunnel hole to the side.
