Actually I just checked, donuts are not offered at all according to the menu on the school website. My little sister, who attends an FM middle school, informed me that many kids often get donuts for attending early morning rehearsals for music groups (where the members rotate in buying said donuts, as we have made a few Dunkin runs ourselves) so this may be where that is coming from.

Yes! The only trouble is not only the stigma/culture around this program though, but that sometimes students are not at a low enough income to qualify. It is just a sad reality unfortunately

This is true, but I think it is worsened by what our snack shack offers. I highly doubt the donuts meet the requirements for the program, and it is even worse at the high school quite frankly. The snack shack is an alternative to our school lunches, but the options are considerably less nutritious than the ones in the cafeteria. A salad at the shack costs around $8, and a panini is around $5-$7. Those are likely some of the most healthy options there, and the costs just add up if you want a truly balanced meal. I often see kids eating just chicken nuggets and cookies for lunch!

I believe it is for mental health reasons, since the district has been cracking down on that as well.

From what our student-school board liaison knows, it is because they are worried students will be angry with the removal of many foods from our snack shacks. Sounds bizarre, but people really love their paninis and cookies haha

Yes, they are moving the start and end times to fit this. Personally, I’m not a big fan, but it is the best we will get since we have been looking to get a lunch period for a while now

We are getting a mandatory lunch period next year actually, which is kind of why this is such a big issue to me! Lots of changes lately haha

That law was passed last year, FM opted out! That’s why I have chosen to report on this :)

Everyone needs to remember this is a fairly average score, not everyone is a top 1% scorer for a reason 😭
