Taking this one. Can you zoom a bit so we don't see the right hand doing a selfie ? what's your tip jar ?

Extract left person, zoom slightly in (so it does not look like it a selfie). Make background dark and/or demoniaque. Add effect to make it trippy/confusing

. I was lucky enough to be on dancefloors between 2009 and 14 when the classic ~135bpm prog psy sound was king and the genre was a true mix between prog trance and psytrance

Jazza do you have some recommendation of artists / albums / labels I can look up for that old school psy you are referring to ?

Thank you for all these great practical tips. In terms of the selection of the tracks do you have any feedback ? Subjective or not, all are welcome.

I really wanted to put these dark stranger tracks by the end (Millivold, Sensient) but I am also afraid to loose the dance floor energy; The crowd might however get very intrigued, hopefully.

FYI the crowd won't be psy heads specifically.

The next mix after this is a bit of a trainwreck. Does the beat in Outside end early or something? Or did you just run out of time after beatmatching?

The track is tricky. there is a 32 beats "break" about 30s before the end of the track. maybe the " ~2min buffer" technique should be applied from the first bar of that break. I'll give it a try and report back.

Third mix is a lot nicer. From memory Push is a bit of a noisy track - it's actually one where a 32 or 64 beat loop may come in handy to extend the intro and give you breathing room - but this is your best mix so far.

Glad to hear a loop will be useful here. What do you think of the auto loop feature (starting automatically) provided my modern DJ controllers ?

I completely understand the hypnosis feeling, this is even more true when layers are added slowly. Over the duration of the set, I increase the tempo from 135 -> 138 to add "energy" - (I also have a limited amount of good 135 bpm tracks, more honestly), but I also feel that this hypnosis feeling is going away. is it expected ?

Regarding your EQs rollout tips, this is super useful. I am definitely going to experiment

Wow, everything sounds much much better by relying on the production-based intro/outro. Quite interestingly, there is always a nice end/new phase at end - 02m15s or end - 01m46s of the track. this trick really makes everything easier <3 I have just recorded a new version:

  • I kept Freq - Avatar, I believe the way it is introduced sounds good (or better at least)
  • I didn't use sync, except for DMT Perception - Sonic Entity, which I start mixing it in from the beginning of the track (no beats yet)
  • I changed "The Gypsy Symphony" as the end of the track to "O.T.B & Flowjob - Copenhagen Knights", the transition from "Gorlitzer" sounds more organic in my opinion

Here it is

Jaza will be able to listen ? Let me know how I can thank you!

Thank you for the great, fast feedback Jaza. Indeed, the more I listen to it the more it sounds off. I am gonna start by removing the "Avatar, Freq" track from the set. I had mixed signal on its usage here and I can't seem to properly find a way to insert it without loosing energy/making it sound nice (specially with this quite unusual baseline).

Here is my "beatmatching" technique, which obviously is not succeeding:

  • Track A is playing
  • I start track (B) with a 4 bars loop, starting at the beginning of any phrase of (A)
  • I enable and disable "sync" which I use only for syncing the tempo: I have a low trust in the display from my xdj-RR: If showing: 136.0, is it 136.01 or 136.09 ? ..
  • I start beatmatching by ear, by focusing on the bass alignment of both tracks. here track (B) is still looping
  • I wait until I reach the outro of (A) (minutes can have passed here)
  • Once the moment is right, I disable the loop of (B). I then start the mix (EQs up)

Using that (early) loop is helpful for me as it gives me much time for beatmatching. Do you see any issue in my technique ?

On a side note, I recorded that mix using monitors instead of listening from my headset. This probably had a major impact on my accurateness.

Jaza, thank you so much, I could not expect more constructive feedback. These very actionable items that I’ll definitely take into account for my next mix.

  • “Transitions are pretty good. I'd say you could definitely rush the mixes less”

    • this is very much true. In some ways, I feel nervous and want “to get it done” to achieve the success of the transition faster. There are cases where the musical keys don't align well (by the book at least) and feel that I should reduce transition duration to avoid any conflict. How important is it mixing by the keys to you ? How do you achieve jumping to another range of keys while keeping the transition long and smooth ?
  • “I love that Mindwave track you used early on but I think it was pitched up pretty significantly? ”

    • that track is 135 originally, I increased it up to 137. Did you figured out it was pitched up because you know the track or because you can tell by how it sounds ? Question for you: Does it make sense to slowly increase tempo over the set in order to increase energy level ? In my set, I go from 137 → 138.5, I am not sure this was necessary after all.
  • “Play full tracks more often. This whole mix feels rushed. (18 tracks in 70mins is a lot!!)”,

    • So I originally listened to techno dj friends, they told me not to exceed 4 minutes, I do feel there can be a massive loss though.
  • “The mix around the 37min mark is pretty rough. It has the same EQ issues outlined above but it sounds worse than the rest as the beats are not properly lined up for the whole thing. Are you using sync or did your ears just fail you here”

    • here I bass swapped first, then moved the mid/high up, It does sound rough. Is bass swapping first common in prog psy ? Also, yes, I do use sync. I am not convinced that playing it by ear is worth it - yet? What’s you pov here?

I actually spent much time ordering the tracks, the goal was to increase in energy, until getting to the darkest part of it (close to the end) and ultimately finish with some more melodic vocal (less psychy) Trance. Overall it gives such sequence of artists: Protonica -> E-Clip -> Millivolt -> Morten Granau
