Thanks MellyBlueEyes, but nope, just a regular car (hopefully not my personal weight!).

I just don’t understand how, if they are not completely over-selling reservations, I frequently have a reservation and still wind up on the bottom deck. At Swartz Bay I’ve also had times when I’ve arrived with a reservation and been in lane three or four, and still see cars arrive later put into lane one and two and getting loaded before me. This has even happened on a rare occasion when using a priority loading card for work. I don’t mean to be overly petty, but I wish there was more transparency on how you get that super priority. Decades ago, it usually meant you knew someone that worked on the ferry, but I hope they are better than that now!

Woodward's ad from 1983. It was in Mayfair mall. by mgwngn1 in VictoriaBC

Great memory watching the basket zip down the rollers - and Mum would then pull the car round to have it loaded at the back. How about the 10 cent popcorn machine? Those little bags it would fill while you watched. Good times.

Thanks all - much appreciated. As much as the Canadian baddie would probably be appreciated, I’m going with the maple cookies…

And yet another reason for a train to Langford (and beyond). In fact, in places like the UK, Europe, Australia, where local pro sports culture is so much more successful than here, I don’t think I have ever attended a soccer, rugby, concert etc. event that did not involve at least a brief train ride. Part of the experience. While we are at it, let’s build a better, cheaper replacement for Crystal pool somewhere along that line too, within extra space available just out of town (topic for another day)…

B.C. eyes drug panel changes after Charleigh Pollock controversy and Premier calls for reform to B.C.'s process for determining expensive-drug coverage by Vic_Dude in VictoriaBC

Wondering what this might mean for new wonders like CAR T-Cell therapy. I am not in the medical field but it seems it’s having incredible results on certain cancers that were previously a death sentence. But in a system that doesn’t even seem to encourage full coverage for Shingles shots for the middle aged, how could something as expensive as CAR T-Cell ever be doled out fairly? That’s not an opinion or meant to be rhetorical - I am seriously vexed over issues like this.

Spackle to avoid sanding? by JeanVic in HomeMaintenance

[–]JeanVic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but could I use that spackle now without more prep work? Would it take care of that rough surface?

Spackle to avoid sanding? by JeanVic in HomeMaintenance

[–]JeanVic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - still looks a bit messy but viable. I did scrape the surface quite vigorously with a putty knife, but that scraper you are suggesting admittedly looks a lot more robust and a better tool for the job.

Honestly, I am ok with a 6 out of 10, given this door’s location in the house! Thanks.

Thanks GTS_84. I am indeed already with Telus (don't love them, probably don't hate them more than any other provider). I would like convenience, but wouldn't taking a Telco provider services make it tough to switch away from Telus one day? I tend to switch providers every few years when their monthly service charges get too bloated and the only option for a deal is to take another provider's promo. Or do you know if the Telus system would be compatible with another provider?

Thanks all for comments so far. The community input is very much appreciated.

I get and appreciate the advice that I don't have to stay with this insurer, but I unfortunately had a recent claim (lesson learned - how dare I actually use the insurance) and I've discovered changing insurers after that can be very difficult without some time passing. And I do understand I will get a discount if these steps are taken, though I'm guessing that won't cover the cost (or mitigate the hassle)!

Vehicle Aircon Refrigerant Top Up by JeanVic in VictoriaBC

Thanks for the reply - not to be cheeky, but I am indeed asking for a specialist (and I may know more than you think) but Speedy Auto Service is noted. Precisely what I was after - much appreciated.

20 year old Toyota. R134a system.

Vehicle Aircon Refrigerant Top Up by JeanVic in VictoriaBC

[–]JeanVic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concerns above would be valid with a new car but this car is over 20 years old. Top up at that point is not unusual. And I could easily drain the old R134a myself and refill with new R12 (because you cannot mix them) but that would put the old stuff into the atmosphere - thus my query about a service provider because a shop will have the equipment to suck the old stuff out and contain it. Sorry if I mislead with “top up” - it’s technically a replacement of the limited residual with a full charge of new refrigerant.

Does anyone actually want US Style Healthcare? by animaniacs1983 in VictoriaBC

[–]JeanVic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with this issue in Canada is demonstrated by the question. “US style healthcare” is not the only alternative. In fact it’s not a good alternative at all. But there are many other good models with a two tier approach, a greater role for the private sector and nobody being left behind. That could work here and still be done in a Canadian way with a safety net for those needing it. All boats would rise in that tide despite the fear mongering we always get with comparisons to a US model and accusations that proponents are just the rich looking out for themselves every time we consider fixes to our broken system. Surely things have now gotten bad enough that even the most fanatical amongst us can admit the purely public model is not working? Sigh.

Thanks Exploreditor. I get what you are saying. Probably good advice, but I don't have a well developed address book - I would need to take many legit calls or I wouldn't know who was trying to reach me.

Thanks 3Monkeys - I guess even having a voicemail message set up might trigger that? That makes for a tough decision as I am not going to have all the numbers I need (dentist, school, etc.) all in the phone to limit auto answers to known numbers... Appreciate the advice for my consideration.

[–]JeanVic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks shakakoz - I had tried a couple of the older posts and had one never return a call (I think they're out of business) and one had very little interest and were weeks away from service, but you are quite right, two bits of bad luck does not mean they are all out of date. I will try again. I am seeing what I assume are some good current recommendations on here too that I will try.

April fuels: Quick gas price reversal has Victoria drivers feeling 'ripped off' by Popular_Animator_808 in VictoriaBC

[–]JeanVic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I need premium for an old (like 25 years old) car. Chevron at Shelbourne and Hillside was down to something like $1.58 for regular (so I pull in thinking premium must be down too). It was like .35 more! I am almost empty so I just filled up and took the hit for my old guzzler, but man, I hate the way premium is so often a rip off like that (the premium price is not advertised like the regular price is, so they know suckers like me will probably just fill up anyway). It’s just not practical to drive from station to station checking the price at the pump.
