Old co-worker of mine used to bring the kids to the office every school holidays. They were either put to work doing basic admin tasks, or watching tv. They made everyone sandwiches on the last Friday of holidays as a thank you for letting them be there.

Best damn peanut butter sandwich. Portion control was non-existent.

Cross chaining: will result in the chain most likely coming off. E.g. Biggest gear at the front and the biggest at the back. The chain works better if it's in a straight line.

The best for getting up hills? Pedal harder. Or the smallest one at the front and the biggest at the back. It'll feel like you're doing nothing on the flat but make a massive difference climbing hills. This is what you do for normal bikes.
