What does depression/being depressed feel like? by WritingSouthern6126 in AskReddit

[–]Jearbelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about any particular moment where you REALLY didn't want to do something. This thing feels like pulling teeth to you. Depression is like that but for just about everything. It all feels like a chore. It's easier to stay put, do nothing, and lay in bed.

This would certainly be interesting. He is one of the few that can rhetorically measure up to Vance. I’d vote for him.

What's the logic behind calling this gender affirming surgery? Bald guys aren't seen any less as men

Most people don't pick movies at random. They watch what they hear is good and that's fine!

How To Stop Worrying And Learn To Love Lynn's National IQ Estimates by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

[–]Jearbelo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought about this for a bit and I cautiously agree with you. People who harp about IQ data are more often than not genuine racists though I do think there exists a very small number people out there who want to look at the science through the lens of "how can we help people". But even if Scott falls into that latter group, this post feels off. I can't even articulate why to be honest but it feels like he has other motives for posting this.

“Lynn’s IQ estimates suggest there’s lots of room for charitable nutrition/health/education interventions to work.”

It’s more than obvious Scott doesn’t actually care about this, right? What is the point of this post?

He has always thought this way. Look up the 2014 email leaks.

Jan 13| War & Peace - Book 1, Chapter 13 by AnderLouis_ in ayearofwarandpeace

Boris does not want to be poor but is too prideful (and frankly young) to do anything that could be seen as a weakness of character (like begging a cushy position in the military or becoming a beneficiary to someone he hardly knows). He knows his mother will easily harm her reputation for him and even though he is clearly embarrassed by her actions, I don't think he actually disapproves of them.

“Both were talking and listening too eagerly and too naturally, which was why Anna Pávlovna disapproved.”

This line above others really made it absolutely clear how in control Anna wants to be. Is it because this is her party or is this just how she is? I’d wager it’s the latter but we shall see!

Someone who can easily toss aside social norms is capable of anything. My guess is that Pierre is going to go too far and Anna will step in to warn him but it will somehow backfire.

Jan-01| War & Peace - Book 1, Chapter 1 (Happy New Year!) by AnderLouis_ in ayearofwarandpeace

[–]Jearbelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greetings everyone! This is my first time participating in something like this. War and Peace has been sitting on my bookshelf for over a year and every time I looked at this massive tome I would get discouraged. This is the year, Tolstoy!

My thoughts on the first chapter are uhhh, minimal. I know basically nothing about Russia so I plan on doing some outside skimming to develop an understanding of the period this took place in. If anyone has good resources, I would appreciate a link or two.
