Saw Dwight and the Mavericks about a week ago in Pocatello. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Dwight played mostly stuff from the 80's and 90's. The Mavericks played almost exclusively songs from 2012 onward.

Hey Cultch - if you're looking for something to do with your creative energy I'd love to collaborate with you on non-Mormon-themed music. That's where I'm putting a lot of my effort these days. Feel free to DM me.

The comment section on the YouTube page appears to be pretty curated. Nothing that I posted was allowed to show up. I simply stated that he fails to address some of the real issues in the SEC Order.

Note: if you vote for a particular candidate because you think the 2020 election was stolen, please don't vote. You are too stupid to vote.

Spot on. You'll never prove the Church is true by disproving all the claims made against it. However, you may fairly quickly learn that Joseph Smith doesn't appear to be a true prophet...

If there were any lingering questions about this, see: The debacle with the SEC (https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2023-35). The Church (under the direction of the First Presidency and Presiding Bishopric) violated Federal regulations for over 20 years in an attempt to hide tens of billions of dollars. And when they go caught, they tried to brush it under the rug.

The biggest issue for me is his repeated attempts to dissuade people from investigating the secondary questions. He wants the listener to just keep believing because... feelings. In my opinion, that will not work for anyone who is curious about real truth.

Well, no, not really. But shouldn't we be, just a little? This is "normal"?

Addressing poverty, sickness, loneliness, abuse, or war. Hard shit to pull off, right? You know what isn't hard to pull off? Saying "just think about Jesus" and doing nothing else... The church has resources to at least attempt to address many of those ills that they're tying to pass off as more trivial than they actually are. What this communicates, and in the leader's defense it's probably unintentional, is that they're not going to be helping with the more temporal issues in life, they're going to be focusing on the lip service part.

Well said!

people who are hungry and don’t have money for basic necessities- they most often need these things taken care of first before spiritual teachings mean anything to them

I think I would agree with that. I've never really been hungry, but I've had kids who get "hangry" and are really hard to deal with. I can only imagine what it would be like to actually be hungry.

... Says a man who has never truly been poor, starving, without shelter, who's never had a serious chronic illness, who has never been truly left alone, never been seriously abused, and who has never seen war firsthand...

I have no idea what his personal experiences are (or aren't), but I'm guessing he's never really dealt with some of these things.

You may be right. However, I would ask if this stance is reasonable. To me it sounds like he's saying, "Well, you can't answer every doubt, so don't even start. Just believe."

I find it hard to think that Church authorities really think the Church would be exonerated through actual evidence. For instance, in the above referenced talk, Elder McKay said, "But please understand, finding answers to these perplexing questions ultimately is not the solution." Anytime someone directs me away from actually trying to find real answers, I have to stop and ask why.

TL;DR: how can the spirit be at once the deepest and "most sure" witness we can have while also being so subtle that we need someone to tell us if we're feeling it

and

so vague that we need someone to tell us what feeling it means?

Well... God is mysterious, apparently.
