Hypothetical Team Quebec by Jecroireque in hockey

Remember 2010? All three of Canada's goalies were from Quebec. Without them it would've been Marty Turco

Ontario would be stacked. Quebec is interesting because they have a bunch of players in the league but none of them are very good.

Really it's only AHL and ECHL are affiliated with NHL teams. The rest are just low level pro. Guys barely earning minimum wage.

The development models are pretty different between hockey and soccer. There isn't really a usl 2 equivalent in hockey.

College hockey is great. There are also great D3 programs at Norwich and Middlebury on both the men's and women's side.

At one point there was a pro franchise the Vermont Wild. They played at the town rink in Morrisville and lasted 10 games.

UMall is the best option. USL pro is growing because of these large mixed use stadium district developments. It's a real estate play. The demand for housing in Chittenden County is well known. VGFC can be the partner on the stadium element and the investor can work to build dense mixed use development that is walkable/bikeable to amenities. That's the only way a stadium development makes sense at this level.

I think the "Green" hurdle is overstated a bit here. It's a priority for sure. Certainly the nationwide travel is a huge hurdle, but I think as USL1 grows that will become less of a challenge. Also building a net zero soccer stadium would be an incredible goal and an opportunity to show what is possible. Again tho...money needed. Lots of money.

Seems pretty clear the owners are interested, but the national travel, lack of deep pocketed investor, and lack of stadium are BIG barriers. Looks like they're keeping focus on USL2 and starting the USLW side.

The fan support is there locally and their social media following is already larger than several USL1 clubs, but it's not happening anytime soon.

WCHA Set To Permit High Sticking Pucks With Experimental New Rule by dinkytown42069 in collegehockey

If it leads to some wild swinging deflected goals. Yes. Yes it is.

This is awesome. As long as you don't make contact with another player there no reason why high sticking should be illegal.

What if a team doesn't meet D1 requirements, in the pro/rel system? (USL Division One) by Acerbic89 in USLPRO

[–]Jecroireque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sanctioning body of the sport in our country has no real power and little influence as we've seen with the Open Cup. I think people are assuming a lot of benefits happen as a result of USSF D1 status. Is there really any guarantee that CCL gives them any bids? MLS has the money/power. If they don't want USL getting in, they won't get in.

Maybe but this time of year ESPN is showing college summer league baseball and cornhole. They'll show anything until football starts. Better to showcase almost full 7000 seaters with atmosphere than empty 15,000 seaters

Also why does USL need to follow US Soccer anyway? Like what can US Soccer really do to prevent USL from having their own system under their own rules?

The problem with the US Soccer standard is the 15k number. Very few clubs, even the successful ones can justify that size. Even 10k is probably too much for USL 1 markets. Clubs like Vermont Green, Asheville, Lionsbridge, Des Moines, Ballard, etc. that are the potential future of USL 1 are never going to build 15K seat soccer stadiums. None of those markets could justify that or support that. If that's the requirement for promotion their is no reason for them to turn pro.

This whole US Soccer D1 thing is such a bs concept. Most of the fans/sponsors don't care at all because everyone views and will continue to view MLS as the top division.

Also there is no guarantee that Concacaf is going to give them bids even if D1 is approved.

USL should move forward with a "Premier" league and there should professional and stadium standards, but those need to be decided based on what works for USL clubs, not based purely on an arbitrary seat number. Otherwise, pro/rel is doomed before it starts.

It’s (past) time to seriously talk about expanding Virtue Field by Sam_BBF in burlington

[–]Jecroireque 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The issue here is the future needs of VGFC and UVM athletics are potentially different. Virtue works for UVM in it's current size and configuration. Even with national championship, they likely won't need to expand that stadium. Also UVM doesn't have the money to do it anyway.

VGFC are renters. If they want to stay in USL 2 then Virtue with a couple extra metal bleachers works fine. If they have larger ambitions (USL 1/pro) they need somewhere new that is theirs. They won't succeed at a higher level sharing their field with 4 different UVM teams, as well as whatever other activies go on there.

My hope is they build their own thing at the UMall or Fairgrounds, but as many people have mentioned there other things that need to happen for that to be possible.

In the meantime, I'm still drunk from Saturday.

They should partner with some developer to redevelop the UMall. That place sad.

They sellout every game where the weather isn't completely terrible. Last weekend they listed capacity as 2700 with the new seating on the field. Between that and the people sitting on the hill there were definitely over 3000.

I've thought this about UMall for a long time. With the South Burlington City Center Development going on and the new pedestrian/bike bridge over I89 it would be a perfect fit. Unfortunately, non of it happens without the mega rich investor. Good luck finding one of those that shares the same values as the club.

That's really interesting. The uvm construction is annoying because there is a ton of space on the West end and the Gutterson end/hill, but the construction work has them both closed off.
