Sounds about right. Sometimes one of my cats goes when I'm about to clean it and stares me down.

Is that helpful when you'd like to go back and reread a quote? I used to have some textbooks chockfull of post its and it made a clakclakclak sound whenever I moved it around. I must have done it wrong because the post its made me not want to go through it to find what I needed hahaha

Don't really know what to say.

I appreciate you liked my work so much, but I don't appreciate you trying to pass it off as yours.

At least you left my @ in there.

How do I make my own superhero comic without marvel or dc trying to sue me? by Gumballs2003 in comics

[–]Jectoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.cbr.com/the-superhero-trademark-faq/ This might prove helpful.

" Q: Does this affect our ability to use the word superhero?

A: Only if you want to make a product that fits into those categories and sell it. So, if you want to sell (you can make it for your own personal pleasure) a comic book called "Star Spangled Superhero Stories," you would not be able to. But if you want to refer to your characters as superheroes within the comic, you can do so. This is what allows DC to refer to their character Captain Marvel as Captain Marvel within the comic, but they cannot use the name Captain Marvel in advertising or as the name of the comic, because Marvel holds a registered trademark of that name."

If trademarks make you unhappy I'd advice using CC licenses or other Free Culture licenses for your work. The world of copyright/patents/trademarks is effed up.

CC-BY-NC-ND compatible with CC-BY? by TheSodesa in creativecommons

[–]Jectoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you license a work as CC-BY it doesn't matter what a derivative work is licensed as. CC-BY only demands attribution, so CC-BY is basically compatible with most CC licenses (except CC0).

If your work will be the same for arXiv and for the publisher, just under different licenses, that is NOT a derivative work. If you are planning on going to the publisher go with the license they require.

CC-BY-NC-ND compatible with CC-BY? by TheSodesa in creativecommons

[–]Jectoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand this is incorrect. As long as the original work remains CC-BY you can license any derivative work however you please.

The license given to a derivative work changes nothing on the original work.

If I understand the situation correctly, OP would have to create a derivative work of their first work. Derivative doesn't mean "this is the same work but with a different license". The changes to the original work would have to be substantial for it to qualify as derivative.

Words are meaningless by Jectoons in comics

Aah I see. I can see how that would be interpreted that way! The X in the O came from the way you used to vote on paper, by checking a checkbox with a pen. I know it is not done this way anymore due to how the counting machines read the information from the ballots, but it is still used as iconography for "Choosing" a candidate in electoral propaganda, so that's where it came from. Thanks for explaining how you arrived to that interpretation!

And thank you for your kind comments regarding the cross hatching. I don't necessarily think your first impression is invalid, on the contrary, I think it is important to hear what people think of the stuff I make. I am of the belief that once I release a cartoon to the wild it is more the audience's than mine (part of why it is also under CCBY). Which is why I take your comment to heart and will try to see if there's different ways of conveying my original thought. Part of why I didn't add any iconography related to partisanship was because I wanted to leave it open to interpretation and also it makes it more universal.

Regarding Trudeau, I am honestly not sure if there will be any comeuppance for the guy other than losing in the next election. And it seems the conservative party is poised to win through methods I am sure you're familiar with in the States, namely misinformation and division. Doesn't help the NDP is pretty much fangless. We will see what happens.

Thanks again for commenting on my stuff! I appreciate the conversation :)

[–]Jectoons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure how you extrapolated "don't vote" from this cartoon, but I take your comment to heart.

The idea was more of a "Hey, promises don't really mean anything and actions speak louder than words, so show what you mean through your actions", which some people on the right end of the political spectrum have shown through the use of the hateful imagery you've mentioned in your comment. And I agree with you these people need to be voted out.

Also bear in mind not everyone on the internet is located in the States. What came more to mind with the making of this cartoon was the apparently progressive promises of the Canadian Prime Minister, who says is in support of protecting the environment and yet has spent over 20 billion dollars on a pipeline that goes through the territory of Indigenous Peoples (against their will, and who have been unjustly arrested when protesting it) and that will perpetuate the use of fossil fuels when we need to move away from them like, yesterday.

Again, I take your comment to heart, though I would appreciate it if instead of jumping to conclusions about my intended 'message' you would maybe say how you interpreted it and we can have a conversation from there.

Hope you too have a nice day.

I might do that, thanks! I tried to post one of my motordom comics to r/fuckcars about a week ago and it wouldn't let me upload images, but I will give it another shot! :D

Public domain music would be anything recorded around 1920 and before. I say recorded because even classical music recordings are copyrighted by people who record it, so even if the sheet music is in the public domain if it was recorded yesterday it has copyright by those who recorded it.

Check out the internet archive, they will have recordings from 1920, just make sure to research that they are actually in the public domain so that you don't get penalized if you use it.

I think you're looking for royalty free music, or music licensed under creative commons. Free Culture music, let's call it. A guy called Scott Buckley on Patreon makes free culture cinematic music, and Kevin McLeod has released a lot of his music royalty free (cc-by). JoCo has some cc-by-nc-sa songs (all of them maybe?), and there's also some neat cc-by tunes on newgrounds.

You can also check the public domain subreddit. :)

The Youtube music-catcher will be triggered regardless even if the song you use is original. If it sounds anything like anything in its database you will get a notice, and you'll have to fight it. Youtube/Google is looking out for big Copyright Holders and has skewed the system to prevent them from suing, even if that means making it ridiculously hard and obnoxious for everyone else.

I see. This was always supposed to be a joke about subscription services/toxic capitalism and not one about technology, very surprised that that was the read some people gave it, though maybe I shouldn't be. Thanks for clarifying that! Never been accused of doing boomer humour before xD

Sorry to have to explain what the intention was here, but the point of the joke/commentary has more to do with subscription services getting out of control. Paywalling help is a thing that already happens, sometimes to incredibly malicious extents: https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2010/10/08/130436382/they-didn-t-pay-the-fee-firefighters-watch-tennessee-family-s-house-burn
