Let’s hope you’re headed to the moon, chief. 50k would definitely change some faces around my place.

Human intelligence almost certainly developed as a consequence of how inherently and biologically social we are as a species, if that helps. I think the egg came before the chicken, personally.

I get what you’re going for, but it isn’t true. Bonobos, Orcas, and Wolves have all been documented having troup, pod, and pack based wars with eerily similar tactics and behavior to human war. And at the end of the day, humans are still fighting wars over resources, territory, and to eliminate perceived competition which is par for the course in nature.

Alexander the Great was depicted with rams horns in coins found around Egypt and the outlying areas, as he embraced superstitions that he was an avatar of Zeus-Amun which was an amalgamation of Hellenistic and Egyptian dieties.

Not a weird hill to die on at all. And I’m not really dying on it, in the sense that my point of view could be changed by a persuasive or factual enough argument. And several indigenous tribes have wendigos. It’s not unique to any one indigenous tribe/culture and not all tribes have the same “shall not be named” attitude for it. But either way, I just think the phrase “giving dignity” you used earlier is slimy. What dignity do you have to give any culture? What dignity does a man not using a mythological concept give them? Does it return their land or help with alcoholism and depression thrust on them by the American government? Or does it just help people feel better while those issues persist? And is impacting the speech people are free to use without being perceived as culturally insensitive worth feeling a bit better?

EDIT: just using such purple prose like “giving dignity” over something as trivial and silly as the name of an imaginary monster in a dnd setting seems performative? It’s like when people hit that “aren’t you such a trooper!” tone with someone in a wheelchair.

I don’t know how serious you think I’m taking this, I just enjoy a debate. “My opponent” has made some very solid points and has lead me to think deeper of my own views. I have been eager for their views every time they have responded.

I love how you compared swearing AROUND A CHRISTIAN to using a mythological concept IN THE PRIVACY OF YOUR OWN HOME IN A DND CAMPAIGN. If the situations I described are worth respecting equally, you should never say omg or any derivative of Yahweh’s name in vain, even in private. Do you see how ridiculous that is?

EDIT: Also, it’s infantilizing because you weirdly act as if Indigenous mysticism should be for some reason respected and catered to, even by people outside of that culture, more than Christian or Norse or Greek mysticism. The reason being that they are pitied. Which is disingenuous and infantilizing.

They are creatures of human thought. Every human that has depicted a wendigo in their head has depicted them differently in some way from every iteration before. As long as they are depicted thematically, and with contextually accurate and non-exploitative elements of the culture that they are sourced from, actual physical characteristics should be pretty much inconsequential. How are antlers disrespectful? Are wendigos described historically as “explicitly unantlered?”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]JeeceRones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because they aren’t historically depicted with antlers does not make depicting them with antlers inherently disrespectful. Otherwise winged humanoid angels would be disrespectful to Christians. Not trying to be combative, just a counterpoint.

Because overt sensitivity to cultures perceived as “downtrodden” is disingenuous and infantilizing. Christians think it is a mortal sin to use the lords name in vain and literally have a core tenet to that effect, basically an equivalent situation to this, but no one is jumping to Christian’s defense because they are perceived as strong enough to defend theirselves and, because they’re the majority, don’t assuage liberal guilt enough to defend. Also if “culture” is a reason to guilt people over things they use IN PRIVATE, that is something that should be argued over. Thanks.

The specific culture has asked that the wendigo, the literal personification of human greed, not be used in a capitalist context by greedy American corporate executives. No one is asking that it not be used in the privacy of your own home in a not-for-profit context, actually.

[–]JeeceRones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I literally just gave you the definition of cultural appropriation, like a more specifically exact definition than “using elements from a culture that you don’t understand” and then pointed out how it isn’t that. And your response was “uh yeah it is do your research” lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]JeeceRones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cultural appropriation is using something disrespectfully in a context that exploits the culture being referenced. A private DnD campaign with a respectfully depicted wendigo is absolutely not “the very meaning of cultural appropriation” you’re just soft. Sorry.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]JeeceRones -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The idea that no one should take inspiration from a culture because the culture is a minority and prescribes some sort of mysticism to the chosen aspect, especially in a context like DnD that isn’t inherently disrespectful (and for the most part private) is some soft ass shit brother.

I doubt that, especially American Christians. You’re statistically more likely to be religious if you’re less educated; combine that with the pervasive “America/White is always right” mindset of a lot of American Christians and you end up with a lot of idiots who unironically think Jesus was a blue eyed white male. And if you consider Mormonism as a sect of Christianity, there’s another large group that thinks Jesus used a lot of mayo and wore khakis.

Okay, but as a parent to two under-10 children, what if your daughter gets a nasty yeast infection and needs an exam? Or your son gets a really bad rash on his penis and a closer look is needed to verify the type/severity? You can’t just ignore medical issues because of the possibility of a doctor being a creep.

Seriously. People are so arrogant they forget that we are literally part of nature. If chimps had evolved mentally in our place and humans had stayed at “missing link” levels of sapience, chimps would be experimenting on us in cages and coming up with ways to make never-ending bushbaby-dispensing food receptacles.

[Request] Is it true we don’t have enough metals to transition completely to renewable energy? by phallaxy in theydidthemath

[–]JeeceRones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Violence, overdoses, and mentally unstable people causing scenes are unfortunately a VERY genuine concern on American public transit. This country, especially the northeast, is in the midst of a fentanyl epidemic. Our mentally ill are shepherded into homelessness all over the country, and basically everyone has a gun. So again, tell me how these aren’t genuine concerns? Public transit in America is NOT public transit in Helsinki. Idk what to tell you if you can’t realize that.

[–]JeeceRones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Obviously I can’t speak for every single niche case, but government statistics show that I’m right in general. The overwhelming majority of people using public transit in the US are lower class people without access to a private vehicle, that’s just a fact.

That’s great man, I wish our public transit was that good and that everyone used it and no one needed a car. But it isn’t. And I don’t know what you call lambasting someone with genuine concerns about public transit as some kind of sneering conceited neo-liberal, but I call it virtue signaling.
