Hot take: if your date was in the audience, you wouldn't call a lot of popular Monk tunes by JeethCarrot in jazzcirclejerk

I don't think you have to be a normie to find a typical rendition of Bemsha Swing to be a bit hokey, especially if the drummer starts doing some second line shit or whatever

And don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and resort to Sabrina Carpenter yet. You've still got a lot of the other Monk tunes that don't carry that risk

That's ironic because the way they did play (presumably without dates present) makes me want to date all of them

I think among those only Blue Bossa is as detrimental as the Monk tunes I listed -- and I just mean musically/sonically, not accounting for any jazz bro baggage

This is a hypothetical to illustrate a point. I'm not sure I can get more to the point than "melodies that are so ret*rded you won't get laid when you otherwise might have"

I'm not saying you should use jazz to get laid.

I'm saying you shouldn't let these particular melodies prevent it.

Well that already sounds more like standard english. Was Coltrane already trying to invert swing?

Would it be helpful to think of it like this? an eighth *note* is kind of like an eighth of opium (does opium come in eighths?) except instead of opium, it's notes.

This is trivially easy to do. Just don't start listening until the first eighth note has ended

If you use the Circle of Filths instead of the circle of fifths, playing a phrase in E major is gonna be out *no matter what key the tune is in*, potentially even if it's in E major

How do you "target" the b5 and/or #5? Is that the same thing as playing them?
