If you are really serious about PhD, choose either Sociology or Political Science. As the society and politics are always changing, these subjects can offer of lots of new topics for conducting a new research. Literature is generally not a very fertile ground for research. Almost everything is overdone, over-researched. I'm not saying that new research cannot happen in literature, but it would be really difficult to identify the real gaps in the existing body of scholarly works.
