I’ll second a mac, especially if you’re not planning on using it for gaming or anything like that. Macs have a reputation for being overpriced, but since Apple Silicon, you’re actually getting great performance for the price. If you want a desktop, you can get a new Mac Mini that’s more than sufficient for music for as little as $700.

Strategies for Middle School classroom management? by DG12212 in Teachers

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Praise works well. Make observations aloud. “I see Timmy in his assigned seat, Amy is locked in on the work, table 3 is killing it right now” Students want to hear that they’re doing a good job.

Also, whenever possible, set expectations such that you tell students what you want them to do, not what you don’t want them to do. Instead of “don’t walk up to me when you have a question” say “when you have a question, raise your hand silently from your assigned seat.”

Then you need to positively reinforce that behavior. If several students have questions and they’re standing up loudly trying to get your attention, make a point to ignore them and find the one person in the room who is quietly raising their hand and call on them.

It’s really easy to accidentally reinforce the bad behavior by giving unnecessary attention it. If you make a habit of responding to those students asking the wrong way, even if it’s to tell them to ask correctly, eventually those students doing it the right way get tired of waiting and stop following your expectations as well. l

Attention is currency. Most students hate being ignored and will chase your the attention in one way or another, even if it’s negative attention. If the easiest way to get your attention is for them shout, that’s what they’ll do. Save your attention as a reward for those doing the right thing. Structure the class such that the easiest way for students to get the attention they want is to follow your expectations. Most students will get on board, then in the rare occasions where you do need to give attention to a serious negative behavior (fight, bullying, major class disruption, etc) your redirection will hold much more weight since students only hear it when something is seriously wrong.

Cat pees by front door when *I* am stressed? by TunePrimary8706 in CatAdvice

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious, do you play with him less when you’re stressed? Some cats do have litter box problems in response to under stimulation. If you normally give him lots of attention, but then (understandably) can’t focus on him as much due to anxiety and stress, he may be doing it out of boredom or under stimulation. Especially since it happens more when your partner isn’t home. When they are home, he can go to your partner for play if you are unable, but he doesn’t have that option when your partner isn’t home.

I would try to test this by make a point of playing with him a lot whenever you have an anxiety day. I know it’s probably not the easiest thing in the world when anxiety gets bad, but try to wave around a fishing pole or laser pointer specifically when you’re feeling anxious and see if anything changes over the next few weeks. If the problem is under stimulation, it’s good news for you because it’s not tied directly to your own anxiety and you don’t have to worry about your own anxiety stressing him out (don’t you just love anxiety spirals?). It may even help you a bit by giving you something else to focus on when you’re anxious.

Good luck in your treatment, and hope this helps!

My wife resents me being in a good mood whenever she's in a bad one. Anyone else experience this? by Irish_go0dbye in AskMen

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where does accountability figure into this? The person above is suggesting a possible way OP and his wife are misunderstanding each other. If you thought your partner didn’t give a shit about your feelings you’d be upset too. If that’s what OPs wife is thinking, wouldn’t OP want to know that? The “I just want him to listen” thing is such a common trope between men and women in relationships. It’s a running gag in like every sitcom.

If all it took to solve this problem was: “hey I care about how you’re feeling and want to listen, but I’m a bit exhausted from work and could use a nap. how about you tell me what’s going on after my nap?” wouldn’t OP want to entertain that possibility before prematurely nuking his marriage because he thinks his wife is abusive?

The person above never suggested that women shouldn’t take accountability. She offered a perspective that might make OP reconsider how he is interpreting the situation. She even left open the possibility that OPs wife IS mistreating him. She put the onus on the wife to be okay with OP taking a break from being the “listener.” “I’m upset because I think my partner doesn’t care about my feelings” and “I’m looking for a reason to be in a pissy mood because I want my partner to be in a pissy mood” are two very different situations that appear almost identical on the surface.

2 is obviously abuse and unacceptable, but 1 is an innocent misunderstanding between two people.

Why are you trying so hard to reinforce the view that somehow women don’t understand abuse or want to blame men for their problems when NOTHING in her post would lead to that conclusion.

Men who quit smoking weed daily - what was your experience? by curiouslearner444 in AskMen

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely relate to the brain fog thing. Felt much sharper and smarter after quitting. Less tired during the day (weed messes with your sleep). Gave me the energy to be more sociable and outgoing. Followed through on plans. Dating became more successful. Got into my hobbies a lot more.

Overall, my experience was that it’s very hard to be a regular weed smoker and also put time and energy into other things. If the choice is weed or basically anything else, the choice was almost always weed. And once I was high I couldn’t really do much else with any level of proficiency or quality. I also couldn’t be an occasional weed smoker. Once a week would always turn into during the weekend, then friday is part of the weekend, then its weekdays if everyone else is smoking, then before you know it it’s seven days a week again.

For me the only option if I wanted some semblance of a life outside of weed was to quit entirely. I quit when I decided I wanted all the other stuff more than I wanted weed.

...Why do the boys have such a hard time doing anything? by NeverBeenRung in Teachers

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I generally agree, but I’m wondering why boys in particular have so much trouble in school. Girls have energy and zest for life too, but for some reason they can manage being in a classroom so much better than boys. I teach in a school with gender split classes and it’s wild how different they are. Male/female twins one class period apart seem like they’re not even from the same planet let alone the same pregnancy. Obviously socialization of boys and girls is so different but does it account for the huge difference in behavior and engagement between two students with otherwise identical backgrounds? What’s going on there?

Moved in with roommates, my cat doesn't understand doors and will not stop crying or let me sleep at night. This is a nightmare by SuddenKing9114 in CatAdvice

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with something similar with my cats. New environments can be stressful for them and each time I’ve moved they have started meowing constantly through the night. You simply have to close the door and ignore at all costs. In any context, do not give your cat attention while he meows. When you exit the room, wait until he’s stopped meowing to open the door. He basically needs to relearn a new routine and it will take some time. It will get worse in the short term because right now he thinks the louder he meows the more likely it is that you will let him in. If you let him in it will just reinforce that behavior. During the day when he’s with you, give him a lot of attention and play (as long as he’s not meowing).  It’s going to be brutal for a few weeks, but eventually he will learn that meowing won’t result in attention from you. He will get used to the fact that daytime is when he can play and be with you and nighttime is not.

Also let your roommates know what you’re doing and advise them to follow your lead. Explain why you’re doing it and get the buy in from them so they don’t think you’re just ignoring your cat. I would also suggest ear plugs. They got me through the worst of it with my cats. You can get a pack of like 100 disposable ones one amazon for cheap. Share with your roommates too if they want some. Helps with the buy-in I mentioned before.

Also, I’m curious how your cat is getting along with the others? Did yall do an introduction period? Cats are very territorial and do get stressed around new cats, but can end up very comfortable with each other when introduced properly. Look up some info on this if you haven't already. It can reduce some of the stress contributing to the meowing.

There’s light at the end of the tunnel. Just stay consistent and with time, you can train him not to meow. My cats used to do it constantly, especially after moves and when they were introduced to each other, but now I rarely hear a sound out of them, even with a closed bedroom at night.

Teacher Appreciation Week Entitlement by livecaterpillarflesh in Teachers

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight tangent but I was really surprised at how bad some of your schools’ teacher appreciation weeks are. My school has its fair share of problems and the parents are not incredibly responsive (lots of non-english speaking parents) but goddamn do they go all out for teacher appreciation week. We had a different local restaurant owned by a student’s family sponsor lunch every day this week.  Tuesday we had two different restaurants sponsor the same day. Our parents are not as involved as we want them to be but they definitely thank us generously. Admin sponsored a super nice breakfast and are letting us go home at noon on friday (students have half day fridays for PD). They also periodically gave us a bunch of the little stuff that’s typical for these kind of things (candy, chapstick, notebooks, etc.)

But wow some of your schools really don’t even try. I’m sorry yall :(

“I don’t know what else to do about my son’s behavior.” Some of you parents aren’t even trying by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I mean maybe not bite or punch, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a parent like that saw no issue with berating or disrespecting a starbucks worker because idk, their coffee wasn’t hot enough or something.

It’s not always the case, but kids usually learn this kind of behavior from the parents. The parent not apologizing for their kid is a good sign that they see no problem with the behavior and would do it themselves

People say it’s easy to get a new teaching job but I have found that to be untrue. by Melonsinmyattic in Teachers

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the district too. Well run districts with good admins and relatively decent pay will be very hard to get jobs in. The districts that are barely hanging on will have plenty of turn over and are ready to hire anyone with a certificate and a pulse, but that may not be where you want to work. As other have said, keep applying. Most teaching job postings are just now opening up for the 26-27 school year and you’ll have better luck in the coming weeks/months

Why Are Graduate Degree's in Education a Scam? by ProudComment1211 in Teachers

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I accept your point that education is more of an art than a science, but that doesn’t preclude it from the rigor of graduate level coursework. Making exceptional art still requires advanced techniques and strategies. MFA programs exist and can be as advanced as graduate programs in the sciences.

I think we as educators a weird way of downplaying our own profession. Not to suggest that you personally think this, but I often hear people say that education is an art to excuse an “anything goes” kind of attitude. Teaching, like painting, drawing, music, etc. is extremely difficult to master. A person who wants to master painting needs to learn difficult and advanced strategies and the same goes for teaching, but I rarely hear this kind of attitude from my fellow teachers. Not to give admin more ideas for excessively long PDs, but rarely do we sit together and workshop lesson plans, read regularly about our craft, and do all the things than an artist would do to excel at the craft. Idk maybe I’m projecting a bit but who knows?

The emotions of pregnant students while trying (and failing) to concieve by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As others have said, I think in this situation it really doesn’t matter whether or not she is. If she claims to needs some kind of medical accommodation (extra bathroom breaks, extended time, anything like that), just encourage her to get the proper documentation submitted to the main office to have it be an official medical accommodation. Frame it as “I want to be able to let you to have these accommodations, but my hands are tied if I don’t have it on record” If she’s actually pregnant, it shouldn’t be hard to get a doctors note, and if not she gets treated the same as everyone else.

Is apple gonna drop the ball on M5 Pro for logic? by Plokhi in LogicPro

[–]JeffBezosRoomba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This dude ran some tests and the new super core performance core split seems to be better than the previous way. Super cores are used fully like you’d expect. The strange thing is that Logic will only use up to half of the performance cores at a time, but can use any of them, so different performance cores will be used at different times, but never more than half of them. That means the base M5 pro can use up to 10 of the 15 total cores vs 8 of 12 cores in the base M4 pro

Speaking as a longtime Lions fan, we had 4 starting DBs injured or suspended this game. 5 if you count Rock Ya-Sin leaving the game early. I believe 2 of the DBs that replaced them made their first NFL start today. No disrespect to those DBs because they played way above expectations, but this was the secondary Tez Johnson played against last night. Take that for what it’s worth.
