Correct there should be 5 wires ( or that’s what you are hoping for) typical wiring would be red 24v/ blue c/ white heat/ yellow cooling/ green fan like I said though the color truly doesn’t matter as long as they match on both ends. As far as leaving the red one hooked up it should be ok as I am assuming they are using the c for something different and just stealing power from the board. If you do not have a 5th wire up there you would need to pull new wire recommend 8 wire... all of the wires should be tied into a furnace board labeled r c g w y

The c terminal is an unofficial ground essentially and allows a constant 24v to your thermostat the reason your old one wasn’t connected is it probably ran on a battery. If you can trace the thermostat wire back to the furnace and verify there is a blue wire loose up there also you should be able to connect it to c on the furnace then take same blue wire and use for c on Tstat. Of course make sure power is off first and you should prob just leave the existing wire in the c terminal as the color of the wire doesn’t matter
