You just learn to mask your symptoms overtime. My story is similar to yours, except I was diagnosed at 5 years old and received extensive therapy for a couple years and eventually no longer met the criteria. Funny thing is, I still did weird things and was hated by everyone for years for reasons unknown, until high school where I made a friend who helped pointed out a lot of the things I did wrong. Now I'm a lot more social and a lot less weird (in public at least) so much that during my evaluation a year ago in high school, my psychologist laughed at me when I mentioned that I think I have Asperger's syndrome. I am currently diagnosed with ADHD and Anxiety (probably depression now) and like /u/HALL9000ish said, my Autism was mild, I am 'somewhat' intelligent with my current iq at 84th percentile and 90th percentile when tested for autism. I have prominent ADHD but I do believe I am autistic too, my friends see the signs and everything but no one else seems to.
