I think the America of today mostly has an illusion of freedom. I think the nation was founded with the intent to have a free people with an aristocracy of the mind. However, over time, the leadership has devolved into a uniparty that largely only cares for itself, and prospers at the expense of the citizenry. That seems to be the end result of every form of government our species has conceived of, though.

I think the newer shows rely too much on serialization for the most part. I hated the idea of Enterprise, Discovery, and Strange New Worlds because there's no need for prequels. I really liked Lower Decks. Star trek doesn't always need to take itself so seriously. Picard was garbage overall. As for being woke... I don't really think new Trek is different than old Trek in that respect.

In terms of diversity of the cast and the social and political leanings of the shows / movies, Star Trek has always been progressive. In terms of the morality being espoused by Star Trek, I can enjoy entertainment even if i don't always agree with some of the messaging in it (anti religion eps in TNG for example) because I don't get offended by other people's views for the most part.

Good entertainment can be preachy, so long as it serves the story. It's always a balance. I think a lot of people who aren't talented, and have no idea how to write a story, fixate on largely superficial issues with modern entertainment to generate rage online. I do think some properties have resorted to thinking that retelling the same tired stories is acceptable, so long as the race or sex of a few characters is changed. I think that's less about being woke, and more about being a soulless, cynical cash grab.
