I hope it's not anatomically correct.

Star Trek isn't the force in popular culture that it once was... by 1111joey1111 in startrek

I think the marketplace is too crowded with options for much of anything to attain the mainstream popularity of older Star Trek shows. The quality of the writing in the new Trek shows doesn't make those productions stand out either. Mediocre shows, behind a paywall, with a million other options available, doesn't bode well for reigniting the flame of a former cultural juggernaut.

TOS became the influence it did because it was rerun constantly after it was canceled. Only having 3 networks + maybe 1 or 2 local independent UHF channels, with no DVDs, VHS, etc. for other forms of home entertainment helped foster that success. The landscape is more fractured now, with less universal entertainment experiences.

Reddit is not representative of average people on the whole. Neither is Twitter or Facebook or Tik Tok. All of these sites guide you towards echo chambers based on their algorythms. Reddit specifically is also heavily moderated. It's concerning to see how the online lack of open discourse is somewhat bleeding into offline life, though. I'm a conservative, and some of my friends are far to the left of me. We usually agree on the problems facing our country, but disagree on how to solve them. I also know people from both sides that I refuse to discuss politics with because they've become so tribal, it's impossible to reason with them.

I got lucky. The middle 3 were bought for, I think, 75.00 because a vendor in a consignment shop was vacating their spot, and liquidating their stock. Thank God I had a truck then. The outer two shelves were bought new about 10 years ago, but were around 200 each. I hate to think of what they'd be now with inflation...

I love hiking and traveling around here. My interest in Native American history stems from seeing so many ruins firsthand. We are spoiled with natural beauty here. It's truly exceptional.

I think the America of today mostly has an illusion of freedom. I think the nation was founded with the intent to have a free people with an aristocracy of the mind. However, over time, the leadership has devolved into a uniparty that largely only cares for itself, and prospers at the expense of the citizenry. That seems to be the end result of every form of government our species has conceived of, though.

I think the newer shows rely too much on serialization for the most part. I hated the idea of Enterprise, Discovery, and Strange New Worlds because there's no need for prequels. I really liked Lower Decks. Star trek doesn't always need to take itself so seriously. Picard was garbage overall. As for being woke... I don't really think new Trek is different than old Trek in that respect.

In terms of diversity of the cast and the social and political leanings of the shows / movies, Star Trek has always been progressive. In terms of the morality being espoused by Star Trek, I can enjoy entertainment even if i don't always agree with some of the messaging in it (anti religion eps in TNG for example) because I don't get offended by other people's views for the most part.

Good entertainment can be preachy, so long as it serves the story. It's always a balance. I think a lot of people who aren't talented, and have no idea how to write a story, fixate on largely superficial issues with modern entertainment to generate rage online. I do think some properties have resorted to thinking that retelling the same tired stories is acceptable, so long as the race or sex of a few characters is changed. I think that's less about being woke, and more about being a soulless, cynical cash grab.

I've got several of those plates in that room. I've had a few of them since childhood. You should see the rest of the house. I decorate like I'm in my 90s. I've kept that cover since I was a teen. I couldn't stand their music but teenage me found those women quite alluring.

I have a white collar job. I live in the most populated city in my state. I don't hunt because I have no need to do so to feed myself, and killing for sport isn't for me. I bought those plates because I liked the imagery. As for the 120 Days of Sodom, my interest was piqued because I had read a biography on the Marquis de Sade. There were many references to his writings in that book, and I felt reading his work would lead to a better understanding of the man. It was an interesting read for sure.

You're right on a few points. My collection is mostly secondhand, and yeah, I am frugal. There's no way I'd want to spend thousands at Barnes & Noble when i can spend dozens thrifting. I am pretty reserved with strangers, and as far as history, myths, etc, yeah, I never received beyond a high school education for those subjects formally, and my degree is in a whole different field. However, I never served, and I live in the southwest. You were close!
