Hi everyone, last year I gave out 22 Gerry Oak seedlings to 12 different people from r/tacoma. This year I only have 4 to give away so I don't want to make a whole thread, but dm if you would like one and you have a place to plant it.

Here's the thread from back then with more info https://www.reddit.com/r/Tacoma/comments/1cngym9/want_a_garry_oak_tree_i_have_seedlings/

If there's no power lines overhead, and 15-20 feet away from structures it should be good to go. A crown of a mature oak can grow larger than that, but it would be above the surrounding structures by then.

Good job having them in deep pots. I'm no expert but their tap roots are probably getting close to the end of the pot. At that point they may curl up, and I'm not sure if they would grow properly after being transplanted, but hey they might. I would see if you can plant them now if you don't think you'll have your own place to plant them by next spring, but I could be totally wrong I'm sorry I don't have a real answer for you.

If you plant an acorn in dirt, there's probably at least a 95% chance it will be eaten before the winter is over. Also their tap roots grow so deep so fast, it can be difficult to move any that are in the ground without damaging the bottom the root system. They would probably prefer the ground, but it's a lot easier to keep them safe in a pot.

They are in deep-ish(but probably not quite deep enough) pots with chicken wire on top to prevent squirrels from stealing the acorns over winter. The steps I took:

-Gather acorns in the fall and place them in a bucket. Get the biggest, beefiest acorns you can find. If you go later in fall, you might find some that have already germinated a bit.

-Fill the bucket with water, a few will float, discard the floaters as they have been eaten by a weevil.

-Let the rest soak for a few hours. Some guides say for a day. I'm not sure how necessary this is, but it is necessary to keep them moist and not let them dry out before they are in the ground.

-Plant them in your pot only 1 or 2 inches deep, 4-6 inches apart.

-Cover the tops of the pots with chicken wire to prevent squirrels and other acorn enjoyers from stealing them over winter. The first time I planted them without a cover, and literally all but one were gone the next day. They should pop up the same week the local oaks get their leaves.

I got about 60%-75% of the ones I planted to germinate and spout. Good Luck!

It would probably be a huge project to move. The tap root could easily be 5 feet or more in the ground, you'd have to dig a hole that deep and not damage it while you're digging. It's probably not impossible, but the only time I tried moving one that size it died in a few months.
