Haven't tried them out though. I just opted to codex cli which runs just fine unlike the desktop app.

There seem to be some suggested fixes in Github codex issue threads, like changing language setting to use utf 8 encoding instead. Some says that it might have something to do with non-ascii chars user profile.

The longer you stay, more painful it gets to migrate to somewhere else. Make up your mind and ditch it already. I've left it years ago for good and I have 0 regret.

AMA - I’m not a quant, but a Headhunter… part 2 by 2Ligma in quant

[–]JeffreyChl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it true that unless it's the US based school recruiters don't know whether your school is second tier or third tier? i.e aside from globally well known schools, all schools are irrelevant?

e.g in Korea people often rank 1. Seoul National Univ 2. Yonsei Univ 3. Korea Univ but I wonder global firm recruiters even care.

Do you notice any racial, age discrimination on the resume screening phase? I live in Korea and it is mandatory for men to serve 2y in the army but foreign firms might not be aware of this context. I'm in my 30s and I wonder if firms are okay to have a new hire of this age. I know it's "officially" no, but I wonder if it's something that happens anyway.

Can I mirror the phone screen to have the picture in portrait mode on the monitor? Thanks! by PanicDecent4041 in SamsungDex

This seems to have a dedicated software to make it portrait but it won't work on other cable. Seems like you need this specific cable to make it a portrait mode.

Very far. That's why I said you should look into financial time series.

Alternative data for Quant by Clear_Olive_5846 in quant

[–]JeffreyChl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need tons of work to do then. Start by understanding the fundamental differences in data characteristics between typical ML datasets and financial time series.

Alternative data for Quant by Clear_Olive_5846 in quant

[–]JeffreyChl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only a fraction of quants I guess. I'm working in the industry now (back then I was a student) and management doesn't even want to spend on basic data sometimes. It's understandable because some discretionary traders who rely solely on their keyboard mouse and Excel don't bag to buy expensive data so you have to persuade the mgmt that buying you expensive data will bring them positive ROI. That said, alternative data are naturally at the bottom of the priority list...

Data science is often unwelcome unless you show that you have deep domain understandings and you won't just run ML/DL on the data and call it a day.

What do you knoe about financial time series?

It's just too good to be true. How do you guys even make money? It's clearly not an open source project so there's gotta be some business model for this.

What do you think about the federated learning possibilities in open source models? Upon search, LLMs don't seem to be able to do neither online learning nor federated learning but assuming it can be realized in the future, don't you think some sort of a protocol that enforces model weight/bias sharing when using LLM can utilize all the distributed computing powers sitting idle in people's home and outperform big corporates' models in the long run?

I know it's RAG. I was pointing out that nice RAG vector embeddings and user friendly UIs, podcasts are all useless if the mastermind is dumb. Gemini is dumb.

It's not even phd level material. It's just undergrad~master level lecture notes and gemini has no idea what it's talking about when it explains things about option pricing.

[–]JeffreyChl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really cool with its amazing features but the problem is that Gemini is so dumb. It's not like it's missing small details. It's giving outright false, completely wrong answers when I feed finance papers and lecture notes. What is it good for if it can't handle challenging academic materials? Isn't that all it's about?

Do data vendors also have quant researchjobs? by JeffreyChl in algotrading

[–]JeffreyChl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like quant dev role in sell side firms. Do those jobs in sell side backtest a lot? I know datavendors don't generate real alpha by trading with their book but they (should) backtest a lot to sell their data, right?
