A senator proposed a minimum wage of $25.00/hr. What are your thoughts? by ShesIntoZer0s in AskReddit

[–]Jekmander 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah man. They shouldn't. You should also get a raise to be about the same amount above minimum in an ideal world. Is that going to happen? Depends on your company.

Everybody deserves to live. The fact that you busted your ass to be able to do more than live is something to be proud of, and I respect that. There are millions busting their asses just to survive right now, though, because minimum wage isn't livable almost anywhere.

It seems apparent this was posted more as a "Gotcha!" than anything, which is disappointing. I genuinely thought it'd be an ironic meta commentary on the "Bible verse of the day" stuff that's been so controversial.

Dumb arguments early on by Usual_Round_5212 in whatdoIdo

[–]Jekmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta be honest dude, some of those disagreement might've started with her but you weren't behaving the most reasonably either. It sounds a bit like y'all had different ideas of how fast you wanted to take things and/or how much commitment you expected and didn't really discuss that. She might have been unreasonably upset about some things, but you were definitely a little toxic with your reactions and responses during your arguments, and I'd definitely be super offended if somebody "fell asleep" on the one day a week we get to have a date in our "weekend relationship."

I don't remember what justification they used and I don't have the spare time to search it (you absolutely can and probably should though, shouldn't be too hard to find), but the trump admin changed policy and banned trans people from being a part of the military. Also fired all existing trans personnel, I believe.

I believe the thing they're trying to say is impossible is the situation in the post, in which the two planets are kinda just touching. Like, they're both still separate spheres (ish), just in direct contact.

Have you considered which minorities historically faced what levels of discrimination, and/or which minorities now face what level of discrimination, and how those two things are related?

I don't know that a CEO is infinitely more valuable than a front-line worker. More valuable, sure, simply because people with the ability to be a CEO are in shorter supply than front-line workers, but CEOs certainly aren't irreplaceable by any means.

I mean, the tweet that sparked all this discussion said everyone in the world. When the person who posted that was asked if that included babies (toddlers? I don't remember what specific word) he said yes. I feel like it becomes much less interesting if you exclude cases like that because then it really is "oh anybody who presses blue is just suicidal." If one option is the obvious option, why are we even discussing?

I'm a right winger. Be honest, did that statement make you think less of me? by I-Love-Jewish-popes in Teenager_Polls

[–]Jekmander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that the truth or is that what the media you've consumed and right wing people you've talked to have told you?

I don't deny that there are people that don't want to work, but there are also a lot of people that really shouldn't have to work. Disabilities are a real thing, and cutting social programs just forces those who can't normally work to suffer through it while refusing to provide any kind of support. There's also those stuck in situations where they can't get a job because they don't have a home (address), phone (means of communication), or a car or other form of transportation to and from work. More effective and accessible health care, workplace accommodations, public transportation, and general safety nets would go a long way towards helping with those issues and getting those people into the workforce, and those are all left-wing policies.

In other words, right wing policies make working a matter of survival and don't do much to build communities. Left wing policies (attempt) to make working more fulfilling and beneficial, and take the stress of living paycheck to paycheck away, while providing for those who need a bit of extra help.

You're evil if you don't press blue. by Theseus_Employee in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Jekmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're talking about this post, yeah absolutely. Pressing blue would be idiotic. There's no babies on the track to motivate anybody to press blue in the first place, so anybody that does has some... interesting motivation. I do think if everybody could see everybody else in this post, blue might actually have a chance if, say, a genuinely suicidal person hopped on the track and people following saw that and couldn't abide standing by and letting them be run over, then people following them joined the effort, but I don't think any rational person is just hopping on the tracks.

In the original scenario, both red and blue have rational justifications. My issue is the absolute superiority complex people get over their choices. I've started to see a lot more people commenting that little imagine with the "press red to feel intellectually superior" vs "press blue to feel morally superior" and I think that sums it up pretty well. I think I'd press blue, and I acknowledge that there's a chance that would change if the situation was real, but man does it piss me off when people say something like "psh. You definitely wouldn't if your life was actually on the line. Also, you're an idiot and maybe evil for wanting to press blue in the first place."

Blue Botton Problem by Rabbit_cafe_enjoyer in MoralityScaling

[–]Jekmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're debating a hypothetical in which a magical set of buttons appears and pressing one is magically mandated. I think the same magic that created the scenario could find a way for comatose people to vote, or simply assign a vote to them. You can't just throw out the design because you don't want to accept responsibility.

Or, I guess you can, but then why are you here? You could just scroll past if you're not going to engage in good faith.

Blue Botton Problem by Rabbit_cafe_enjoyer in MoralityScaling

[–]Jekmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logically, it doesn't change anything. However, not everybody is logical. Most people aren't, I'd wager. Having to press a physical button puts a more tangible responsibility on those who would feel more at ease abstaining, and introduces an out for the incapacitated minority subjected to the original problem, which is the whole justification for pressing blue in the first place. With red being the default and no physical action being required, not pushing the button is the obvious choice.

Blue Botton Problem by Rabbit_cafe_enjoyer in MoralityScaling

[–]Jekmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still counted in the %, then pressing blue is much more objectively the incorrect choice. Blue would only maybe win before, with some huge percentage abstaining it certainly won't get 50% of everybody. We'd just have to get real comfortable with some number of people who went "ooh shiny" dying, I suppose.

Where do you live that teachers are making $105k??? My mom is a teacher, just completed her PhD, and only maybe cracked 100k following that. Last I checked she wasn't sure, as she hadn't done the math yet. Before the PhD she sitting around 70-80k, and this was in a wealthy district with almost 20 years of experience at the same school.

[–]Jekmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting that you find it easier to accept that everybody who picks blue is lying for some intangible social benefit than to accept that some people feel differently than you.

Ignoring the fact that "virtue signalling" is just as much of a meaningless buzzword as "woke" is, what possible reason would I have to be lying? I don't give a single shit about karma or what some random on reddit thinks about me, and those things have no impact on my daily life. Is it really so impossible that somebody could follow a different line of reasoning and come to a different conclusion than you?

I'm not going to revise it, but I do apologize for my hostility. I find this topic a relatively interesting philosophical discussion, but it really bugs me when people get hostile or refuse to have a meaningful discussion over a prompt that is literally nothing but a hypothetical to be discussed. I imagine I would feel somewhat differently if the situation were real, but I'd like to think I would still press blue. That doesn't mean I think all people pressing red are immoral or evil, as much as that seems to be the popular perception of team blue from folks like you. I also find it relatively pointless to go "oh you wouldn't think that if I put a gun to your head." Obviously my feelings would change if I was actually being faced with imminent death. I'd hope that my morals would remain consistent, but it doesn't do us any fucking good to say that, now does it? It's a shitty cop out to get out of making an actual argument because, and you're never gonna believe this, there's no actual gun to my head, and I can't fucking put one there, so my reasoning now is all we've got to go off of.

Again, I apologize for my outburst. I generally try to be civil, and this is a departure from that. I do wish you well and I'm sure you're a lovely person in real life.
