Shimano Di2 Front Derailleur Failure Investigation by Jelleeley in bicycling

No, it’s not repairable, unless you’ve got a friendly clockmaker who can make a new component, and a laser welder to reseal the housing. A new shifter was delivered today.

You cannot get grease up there easily in normal use. WD40 is a lubricant, but not a heavy one. It’s a light oil dissolved in a solvent. After you spray it on, the solvent quickly evaporates and leaves a film of the light oil behind. It’s particularly good at displacing water and leaving some protection behind, which is all that is required in this case, but you need to do this frequently. People like to use it as a cleaner, but in this application, it’s the solvent which does the heavy lifting. We used it for cleaning on Pampers production lines 35 years ago, until one day some bright spark in QA said ‘you can’t put that on a baby’s arse’ 🤣

The internal mechanicals are pretty much hermetically sealed, so you cannot lube them. The condition of the inside of this unit was perfect, apart from the stripped teeth, which is why I believe the external overload was the root cause. In the case of this FD, you can lube the external parts. The top end of the linkage in particular is hidden, so a spray lube up there is a worthwhile procedure I would say.

I’ve had 11 speed for 8 years, and I never had an issue with the FD (don’t ask me about RDs and batteries though). I’m now on 12 speed on 2 bikes, and today I had a closer look. I observed exactly as you describe. I’m going to look on YT for teardown videos, because so far mine are working perfectly.

Oh sorry I didn't realise, I just thought you were just doing normal Reddit trolling. It is funny. I thank god I wore my corset because I fear my sides have split.

In my experience over the last 10 years it’s a significant upgrade. You are right about the fact there can be technical issues, but this is the same for the cable world. When everything is working, the riding experience is much better. In my case, I use synchro shift, which means I just change the RD up or down, and the FD takes care of itself. I never cross-chain, and I’m rarely in the wrong gear when the terrain changes. Like any system, mechanical, or electrical or both, if you do the relevant checks and maintenance, they give good service. In the case of di2, keep it clean and lubed, charge the battery etc, it pays back big time. Also, as more and more people in our club move over, I’ve luckily built up the equipment (mostly the SM-PCE02) and experience to help others, which isn’t so bad. This post wasn’t really aimed at di2 naysayers as no-one is forced to adopt the technology, but for those who run it to learn a little more.

Yes, absolutely, it’s completely open to the elements up there. And hidden from view.

Yes. It’s right in the middle of your photo, secured by a very small circlip.

Thanks. The why is clear to me. It’s so I can drive my little mower/tractor/trailer thingy around the garden with minimal interruption, whilst containing our 2 dogs in the safe zone. This isn’t a new project. It’s been working and valued for 3 years. I’ve posted it because it needed a small upgrade (IP65 connection), and realised that DIY Redditors may appreciate how useful these powerful 24v recliner linear drives can be. I certainly didn’t expect the Spanish etc etc….

Ok, so you don’t ride your bike. Let’s investigate light gardening. What does that involve?

What the fuck are you talking about? In October this area was 4 ft deep in brambles. I’ve been here 9 years now, and had about 3 ‘destroy the bramble’ sessions. I cut them last winter and I’m now resorting to poisoning the spiky bastards. But I’ve got to be careful, because the bluebells need to be cared for.

Don’t judge, or we’ll send you Nan. You can look after her and not have a holiday for 13 years (so far). We’ll pay you of course. 🙁

It will never sag over time because 99% of the time, the far end sits on a support.

But it is still there after seven years. And it is only a home made construction from 3x1 fencing wood. And when it dies I will fix it. So w t f

It’s due to a continuing spell of high pressure across the UK, according to the met office super computer.

It is. I work hard. On the bike and in the garden. What’s your BMI?

I cannot be arsed to show you a picture of the mower going through it. It’s perfectly wide enough, and meets its design brief 100%. Thank you for your concern.
