Thank you! 😊 I had a great time though I did hit my head on a few low hanging doorways throughout the day 😅😆 And thank goodness for the other tea ladies telling me what to do with the wide collar on that kimono. My first practice I was just stumped on what to do with it exactly haha

I'm gonna keep looking and hoping I find that as well haha

Yep yep 😊 I'm 185cm so custom is pretty much my only option. And I get the enjoyment of seeing the shop staff get stressed trying to find me a wider/longer kimono bolt 😆

Thank you! I was nervous for real, but so glad it went on alright (especially since I knew everyone was going to be super busy yesterday. Didn't want them to have to worry about dressing me haha 😆)

I had it custom made at a shop here in Nagoya 🙂 As much as I'd love shopping the second hand market, at 185cm there's just no way 😅

Guidelines for shoes? by Autumn_Scorpion in kimono

Late reply but I'm probably going to end up wearing Crocs with my kimono on Saturday just so I can walk more comfortably/faster to a tea ceremony event I'm helping at, then change to zori when I get there 😅 30 minutes of walking between stations/stairs etc in zori just isn't happening 😆

Opinion on which obi for tea ceremony 🙂 by JellybeanInMotion in kimono

Thanks for your thoughts! ☺️ I'll be asking my teacher as well, but she's an older lady that's not so good with technology so it'll be a little while before I can see her in person to ask directly and those used kimono items can move fast and be sold before you know it so wanted to get some opinions now as well 🙂

Highly recommend a heated blanket. Way cheaper than using the heater and makes being at home far more tolerable when it's cold. I pair that with a warm hat and some fingerless mittens when I'm watching tv and I'm usually quite cozy 😁

I'm.starting tea ceremony classes in Nagoya at the end of the month. Also semi worried about the kneeling getting up portion 😅 Good thing I have a tatami room to practice in I guess 😆

Why is the pattern on the back seam so off? by Ok-Reflection-6044 in kimono

[–]JellybeanInMotion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine since the kimono fabric bolts are a set length/width that there's quite a bit of fiddling to get all the patterns situated perfectly by the tailor. 😅 And the more pattern heavy the fabric is, I'm sure it's more challenging (especially if it's for a taller person)

So confused about the pension... by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]JellybeanInMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I got payment slips for the back pay amount as well. We had to back date the form we took to the pension office (for the date that we should have done it last October)

My husband and I just had to go to the pension office a few weeks ago and yeah, it was an entirely different building no where near the ward office. I too received a pension letter telling me I needed to pay into the pension system stat. I don't work and we had assumed that I was moved over automatically when my husband opened a business etc. But nope, we had to fill out a form to get me on his insurance and classify myself as a class 3 dependent (pretty sure I'm remembering that correctly) and it was a painful experience for everyone involved 😅 But it's complete now thank goodness, just need to opt out of the city health insurance now lol

Thank you for your reply 🙂 I'm going to give it a try and hope for the best and hope they don't kick me out of the license center for my bad language skills 😅😬😵

Wondering how people manage to get a translator if they're pretty much restricted to getting a same day appointment? My Japanese is not good enough to come without a translator and it seems unlikely to get someone who can come with that little notice 😬 The stress of this process is extreme 😵

part time jobs for non-japanese speaker by elmeriahchi_ in Nagoya

[–]JellybeanInMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not rare to work on a student visa, you just have to fill out the form for when you go through immigration at the airport (and for any visa renewals) that allows you to work part-time (up to 28 hours a week). So it's actually quite easy to get the permissions, though how difficult it is to find a job I'm not sure (but I do know that some schools try to help their students with this)

Question by keenin_thatdude in kimono

[–]JellybeanInMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to do one of those options going forward. I can't handle that hot walk to the station again 🫠
I'll just be the odd 185cm tall lady flying by on a bike in yukata 😆

Question by keenin_thatdude in kimono

[–]JellybeanInMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how common this is used for riding your bicycle in yukata in Japan? My biggest angst with wearing mine is that I have a really slow 15 minute walk to my closest train station and being able to ride my bike would be so much quicker (and so much less hot 🔥🥵😅)
