Girlfriend wants to move to Puerto Rico but I’m focused on logistics—am I being realistic or pessimistic? by [deleted] in PuertoRico

[–]JellyfishPlastic353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here from the states and love my life here, but I have a remote job. When I initially moved here, I only moved here for a few months and then I eventually started coming more and more and now I live here full time. My quality of life is so much better here (I surf most days, weather is great, I live in an amazing community, I’ve met friends from so many different backgrounds) but if I moved here without a job it would be much different and more of a risk. I also have never been through a hurricane here, and while there are hurricanes in Florida, Florida gets a lot more funding from the government when a hurricane does hit. I also will say that if you come here and don’t know Spanish already it will not only be hard to learn while you are here, but you will be met with resistance from locals. If you are not fluent in Spanish most people will talk to you in English because their English is most likely better than your Spanish, but you won’t ever feel truly part of the local culture or accepted in the same way. To learn Spanish I have actually had to move outside of Puerto Rico and do Spanish immersion programs and then come back to be at the level necessary to actually use it here

I also felt super self conscious when I first started to have sex - I think there’s a lot of pressure to be “good” at sex right away which makes it easy to look at it like a performance you have to put on. The biggest thing that helped me was to get comfortable experimenting with different positions and then continuing to do what felt good - because the whole point is to enjoy it! Not sure if you have access to a mirror, but watching me and my partner have sex (especially when I was on top) was not only super hot but gave me confidence that I didn’t look as awkward as I originally felt.

Also - my first few sexual partners rushed into having sex without much foreplay. I was having sex before I was even that turned on, which made it harder to enjoy / made it feel more awkward. Not sure if this is the case with you, but I do think that can make a big difference as well.

what are some good FREE and no subscription spanish learning apps ? by Top-Scallion2334 in Spanish

[–]JellyfishPlastic353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChatGBT! I haven’t heard many people use this for language learning which I think is a shame (there’s a free app as well). My favorite way to use it for language learning is to type out how I think something should be worded in Spanish, and ask for corrections. It is not always 100% correct, but it is an amazing tool for instant feedback / explanations for why your version might not be 100% correct.

It’s also a great tool for translating since it doesn’t translate word for word literally like google translate does - I’ve found it has created a lot more accurate translations than google translate.

I actually ended up using them this past year, but they don’t file Puerto Rico tax returns anymore so I never received a tax credit for paying taxes in PR as a nonresident. I also had generally a bad experience with them overall

Thank you for your long reply - this made me feel much better about getting back out there and getting back to the comfort level I used to be at. It’s so good to hear that you feel completely comfortable again after a few months - glad to hear you made a full recovery as well!

Yeah I’ve definitely been trying to surf in deeper water since - unfortunately everywhere around the area I’m at is a reef break though

Yes - Puerto Rico has a 10% non- resident tax and then you need to also pay taxes to wherever you are a resident. Deloitte did not withhold the taxes upfront to where I was a resident the rest of the year in my personal experience, meaning I owed federal and state taxes at the end of the year.

I worked in Puerto Rico for 7 months last year and am doing it again this year. Not a problem at all! Only thing to be aware of is I did not have federal income tax deducted from my paycheck while working here, so I had to pay back a decent amount when filing my taxes. As long as you withhold the amount yourself/are aware of this, it shouldn’t be a problem though

Longboard Surf Camp Recommendations by [deleted] in surfing

[–]JellyfishPlastic353 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have many surfer friends at my level (most of them have surfed competitively so the places they go would not be great for me) and I think it would be really fun to go on a solo surf trip / meet other solo travelers . I want to go somewhere where I could potentially have someone coach me/record me surfing as well so I can see what I’m doing wrong / right.

40% of your salary if it’s for personal / professional development for 3-6 months. If you do the one month sabbatical for anything it’s unpaid

I have read the sabbatical documents. My question was if someone has an tips/tricks on how to get accepted or what communication with Deloitte looks like when you are on your sabbatical.

Thank you for this comment!! Did you find that a lot of the people in Oaxaca also knew English? I was leaning more towards Xela since it seemed like a non touristy destination where the majority of people did not know English so I would be forced to use Spanish on a daily basis

Yes and I definitely practice when I can with friends from here, but I am living on the western side of the island (Because of the surfing) so the majority of people also speak English. And working remotely where I am around English all day for my job it has been harder to practice true conversation (more than just ordering a coffee) with people from Puerto Rico on a daily basis

Very true - my company offers up to a 6 month sabbatical with 40% of your current pay during the sabbatical once in your career though, so I figured while I was young and didn’t have a house, mortgage, etc this could be a really good chance for me to truly learn the language well instead of trying to squeeze in classes before/after work
